02/08/2025 - Tour 4 Hazmat, along with Truck 10 were requested to respond into Garwood for large quantities of white powder found in the basement of a foreclosed residence, as well as an oil spill in the attached garage. Members made entry into the basement to obtain and test a sample of the white powder as well as preform air monitoring. The substance was tested on two different pieces of identification equipment and determined to be non hazardous. Technicians then mitigated a separate, non related oil spill in the garage before turning the scene back over to Garwood Fire Department.

Thank you to for the quick request for County Hazmat. Be safe, be smart and call early.

12/28/2024 - Both yesterday and today, Tour 2, along with Truck 10 have been investigating a sulfuric acid spill at a local refinery with impact to nearby storm drains.

UCHM was notified for a response via the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to investigate for ways to aid in mitigation, as well as to check offsite impact to local waterways.

Technicians utilizing proper monitoring equipment preformed air monitoring and Ph testing and found no offsite impact, and stood by while the contents of the tank were transferred to a vac truck to ensure no further hazard. Mitigation is ongoing via NJDEP as well as the property.

When in doubt, call hazmat.

At 0915 on 10/02/2024, the hazmat unit was requested mutual aid into Bernardsville for the overturned gasoline tanker on two vehicles and leaking contents. The tanker was hauling approximately 8500 gallons of fuel. On duty and recalled members responded and coordinated with Somerset County Fire and Hazmat personnel as well as the UASI Foam Task Force. Members conducted a damage assessment with Somerset County Hazmat and found the tanker to be leaking fuel from a stress fracture between the rollover protection, as well as from two dome holes. Victims from the accident scene were transported by EMS.

Foam operations were performed by the task force to suppress the gasoline vapors from the spill. Grounding and bonding was conducted on the damaged tanker and receiving tanker. Air monitoring was conducted by members while awaiting the transfer tanker from Ken’s Marine Service. A d**e was set up with on the large hill the incident was located on, and nearby waterways were protected with oil absorbent material. UC Hazmat coordinated with Ken’s Marine to perform the transfer safely.

Responding units operated on scene for approximately 15 hours before clearing the incident. Special thanks to all departments and personnel involved.
