πŸ¦‹ The NEW butterfly house is open! πŸ› We have a few butterflies, some moths, and lots of caterpillars for viewing. Current species on display include: black swallowtail butterfly and caterpillars, little wood satyr butterfly, polyphemus moth and caterpillars, promethea moth caterpillars, luna moth caterpillars, and monarch butterfly caterpillars. The butterfly house will be open and changing all summer.

Unlike other local butterfly attractions, we do not purchase any butterflies. Instead we rely on finding local eggs and caterpillars to raise for educational purposes.

Our mission is to:
-Educate the public about the wonders of metamorphosis
-Reveal the diversity of moths & butterflies in Ohio
-Teach the importance of providing butterfly/moth habitat in your own backyard

In the late summer/fall we will raise extra monarch butterflies to demonstrate butterfly tagging and educate about the decline in monarch populations.

We hope you enjoy the butterfly house and leave with an appreciation of these incredible animals!

πŸ¦‰ You never know *who* you'll see during a program at Blendon Woods! This very accommodating barred owl put on a show for our visitors during the Mother's Day Flower Walk last Sunday. It was perched at eye level, about five feet off the Overlook Trail. Perhaps it was stalking some small animal in the leaf litter and wasn't going to let a bunch of humans interfere with its meal!

Owls should not be approached, but this one was so close to the trail we had to respectfully creep by it. By the time everyone got a look and moved on, the owl was still in place, so we didn't seem to bother it too much.

πŸ¦‡ When we look for signs of spring, we usually think of flowers blooming, frogs singing and birds migrating. But did you know that bats migrate too? This eastern red bat was found along the Brookside Trail a few days ago. It probably recently arrived from its overwintering grounds in the southeastern USA.

The red bat's thick fur protects it from cold temperatures, so they are some of the earliest bats we see in the spring. Look closely and you'll see it is hanging by just one foot. This way it can use the other one to pull its furry tail membrane across its belly like a blanket.

πŸ¦‹ It's National Learn About Butterflies Day! πŸ¦‹

While you might think it's too early for butterflies, we saw several on March 8th during our Eagle Walk at the Hundred Acre Wood. We saw eastern commas and mourning cloaks, both of which spend the winter hibernating under bark or in the leaf litter. As soon as we get a warm sunny day (sometimes even in February!) they come out of hiding to look for food. Few flowers are out now, so these early risers will drink leaking sap or mineral-rich mud.
