“WHY THE ONEIDA CARRY” A presentation by the

The Oneida Carry is the land bridge between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek. Today, the city of Rome, New York, is situated on this site. During the 18th century the Oneida Carry was a crucially strategic site. Located in the land of the Oneida Indian Nation, it was where travelers needed to “carry” their bateau and materials from one stream to another. It was through the Oneida Carry that Britain launched military campaigns to conquer New France during the French and Indian War. It is where they built 7 forts, one of which was Fort Stanwix. During the Revolution, American forces used this fort to block a British invasion of the Mohawk Valley, which contributed greatly to the victory at Saratoga. It is also where the Erie Canal was begun, leading to the nation’s westward movement. This PowerPoint presentation is free and open to the public and lasts approximately one hour.
