Yesterday, I joined local and state leaders in Plainfield to stand with residents in opposition to the proposed SMART Technologies waste-to-energy facility.
My position is clear: I oppose this project, and it should not be built in Plainfield. A new application does not change that.
Plainfield is an environmental justice community, and its residents deserve to have their health, environment, and quality of life protected—not be asked to shoulder additional environmental burdens. We must take seriously the cumulative impacts communities face and ensure that residents are not overlooked when major decisions are made about their future.
I have supported legislation to give communities a greater voice in decisions like this, but those efforts were vetoed by the governor. Residents deserve more than the opportunity to speak; their concerns deserve to be heard and taken seriously.
To the people of Plainfield: your voices are being heard by us, and we will continue standing with you. But we cannot let up. We must keep speaking out, organizing, and making it clear that this project is not wanted here.
I will continue fighting alongside this community to oppose this proposal and protect Plainfield.
