As always, MFD is proud to support our neighboring agencies as they support us. 10 Misquamicut Firefighters including our Chief and Deputy responded to both the scene and stood by in our Station to provide coverage. A strong response to start the Labor Day Weekend here on the beach!

This morning, the Watch Hill Fire Department, along with Automatic Aid from the Misquamicut Fire Department, responded to Pasadena Avenue for a reported structure fire.

Companies arrived on scene within four minutes and found heavy black smoke coming from the chimney. Personnel investigated all floors of the residence and discovered an issue with the furnace. Members utilized Ladder 104 to access the roof and ensure there were no further issues at the top of the chimney.

The residence was thoroughly checked using thermal imaging cameras and gas meters to ensure no additional hazards were present. Once the home was determined to be safe, the occupants were allowed to re-enter, and all personnel cleared the scene.

In total, nearly 20 volunteers from the Watch Hill and Misquamicut Fire Departments, along with members of the Westerly Police Department, responded. The response included two engines, Ladder 104, Squad 100, and three Chief Officers.

This morning at approximately 4:45 a.m., the Westerly Dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a vehicle in the water at the Weekapaug Breachway.

Units from the Misquamicut and Watch Hill Fire Departments responded along with the Westerly Police Department, RI DEM Enviornmental Police, and the Westerly Ambulance Corps. Upon arrival, Chief Findeisen established command and made contact with the vehicle's sole occupant, who had safely exited the vehicle and was uninjured.

Rescue Swimmer units from the Dunn's Corners Fire Department and Charlestown Rescue were requested to confirm that no additional occupants remained inside the vehicle and to assist in preparing it for removal from the water. Additional specialized resources, including the Pawcatuck Fire Department’s underwater drone team, the Old Mystic Fire Department Dive Team and the South Kingstown Joint Dive Team, were also requested to the scene. Command staff of Rhode Island State Police Dive Team provided additional assistance on scene as well.

Working together, along with Weekapaug Lifeguards, responders confirmed the vehicle was unoccupied before the water based teams secured rigging to facilitate its removal and hazard mitigation. Through the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies, several contractors, and a local towing company, the vehicle was safely recovered from the water and the Weekapaug Breachway was reopened to normal traffic.

The Misquamicut Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to all of our mutual aid partners for their professionalism, teamwork, and dedication throughout this challenging and potentially dangerous incident. Thanks to the outstanding cooperation of everyone involved, the incident concluded safely, and all units were clear of the scene shortly before 10:00 a.m.

This incident remains under investigation by the Westerly Police Department & DEM Enviornmental Police.

Congratulations to Engineer Ray Elterich on being named the recipient of the Misquamicut Fire District’s Gerard J. Nardone Award at the District’s Annual Taxpayer Meeting on Saturday Morning. This award is presented each year by the District Moderator and District Board of Officers to recognize a citizen who goes above and beyond in service to the Fire District.

Ray has been a dedicated member of the Misquamicut Fire Department since 2007 and has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our organization. A true jack-of-all-trades, Ray is often working behind the scenes to ensure our department has everything needed to remain response-ready. He has been a driving force behind many of our public relations and fire prevention events and currently serves on the Fire Station Building Committee.

Throughout his years of service, Ray has held the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, and Engineer, always putting the needs of the department and community first.

Congratulations, Ray, and thank you for your many years of dedicated service to the Fire Department and Fire District.
