Rest in peace LT Carreiro. Thank you for your service.

This morning, members of the Watch Hill Fire Department assisted in supporting the funeral services of a local police officer.

Michael Carreiro served the Westerly Police Department, retiring as a Lieutenant after 27 years, and continued his service with the University of Rhode Island Police Department still working as a Detective Sergeant. He was also an active member of The Westerly Ambulance Corps,Rescue for many years. He sadly passed away last weekend, off duty.

As a sign of respect, the American flag was displayed this morning between the Westerly Fire and Kingston Fire (URI) ladder trucks at River Bend Cemetery, with assistance from the members of all 4 of the Town of Westerly’s fire departments and Pawcatuck Fire on the procession route in their district.

Rest in peace, LT. We have it from here. 🇺🇸

Just before 9:00 a.m. this morning, the Misquamicut Fire Department and The Westerly Ambulance Corps, Inc., along with the Westerly Police Department, were dispatched to Little Masachaug Pond off Atlantic Avenue for a water rescue.

A dog out for a morning walk with his owner wandered onto the pond and fell through a thin layer of ice near the center. Deputy Chief Howard (205) requested assistance from the Watch Hill Fire Department for their ice rescue equipment as well upon responding.

Volunteers were on scene within minutes and located Phoenix, a golden retriever, struggling in the water and unable to move with his owner safely on shore.

Members from both fire departments quickly donned ice rescue suits and entered the pond, making a swift and successful rescue, while additional personnel prepared equipment, including an inflatable rescue boat. Phoenix and the rescuers were safely brought back to shore and were all doing well when on scene.

Both MFD and WHFD firefighters were evaluated by EMS for possible hypothermia but did not require treatment. All units cleared the scene shortly afterward — marking a successful first call of 2026.

⚠️ Reminder: No ice is ever safe. Our firefighters train extensively for cold water and ice rescues, but these situations are extremely dangerous.

👏 All of the Chiefs from MFD and WHFD extend kudos to everyone involved for their quick response and teamwork this morning.

Misquamicut Firefighters joined today’s drill at Westerly Middle School alongside members of the Westerly Regional Trench Rescue Team. This valuable training focused on the fundamentals of trench rescue operations along with both of our Deputy Chiefs leading important sections of the drill.

Our firefighters dedicate countless hours to mastering the skills required to be strong firefighters and then go even further by training in specialized technical rescue disciplines. We look forward to continuing this important training in the future with the other members of the team.

Tonight, the Misquamicut Fire Department proudly held our Annual Appreciation Banquet at The Andrea.

Members of the department, along with their guests, came together to celebrate the dedication, hard work, and selfless service of our volunteer firefighters.

Chief Todd Findeisen had the honor of presenting the Firefighter of the Year Award to Captain Brian Holdredge, recognizing his outstanding contributions and leadership over the past year. In his acceptance speech, Captain Holdredge highlighted the importance of continuing to support and appreciate our current members—and the need to actively recruit the next generation of volunteers to serve our community.

Also in attendance were members of the Misquamicut Fire District’s Board of Officers, who helped present this year’s Incentive Awards to several members for their commitment and service.

We also wish to recognize the spouses, partners, children, and families of our firefighters—whose support behind the scenes makes it possible for our members to respond to emergencies at all hours.

To all of our members: Thank you. Your dedication to training and responding to emergencies—day and night, year after year—keeps our seaside community safe, just as it has for the past 100 years.

We are proud of our members and are committed to serving Misquamicut well into the future. 🚒🔥

Tuesday was a very special night for the men and women of the Misquamicut Fire Department! Members from previous years and those currently serving were all invited to enjoy a meal together and share their stories of what it is to be a Misquamicut Firefighter, as we celebrate our 100 years of service!

A slideshow of historic photos was displayed, memories were exchanged, friendships were restarted and new ones made! We also held a brief memorial bell ceremony and Amazing Grace bagpipe walk off to commemorate all those who we have lost in the last 100 years including the 1971 line of duty death of Assistant Chief Albert Gervasini.

We took time to recognize past Deputy Chief Bill Davis who joined us on the night of his 75th birthday! Some of our newest junior firefighters had the honor of presenting him with a cake and leading the singing of Happy Birthday!

This event gave us a good chance to look back on where we’ve been having 4 of 5 living Chiefs of Department attending! Our neigboring fire chiefs joined in on the celebration as well. The centennial committee also recognized the efforts over the last 10 years of Chief Todd Findeisen and presented him with a token of our appreciation as he continues to lead as our Chief.

A great night was had by all and we appreciate the support of our past and current members as well as The Andrea Misquamicut Beach for their kindness in supporting our dinner along with Chef Barry.

Happy 100th Birthday to the Firefighters of Misquamicut. We will be here serving you for 100 more!
