NOW YOU KNOW!

The Westby Farmers Union was established in 1941 serving as a cooperative that supports local farmers and community.

What is a cooperative? It is a group of people united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and is jointly-owned. A cooperative is designed around member welfare. Every member has an equal vote and the economic benefits are distributed based on participation rather than capital investment. The organization answers to its members-not to outside investors.

Westby is very fortunate to have many cooperatives serving us in this area! Can you name some of the other cooperatives in the Westby, C**n Valley and Chaseburg areas?

The wait is over! It is that time of the year when all roads point toward Cashton! Why? It is the Cashton Fall Festival!

The Festival has a long history as this is the 79th year since it began. One of the photos below shows the event back in the 1950s.

In 1936, there were already WHS letter sweaters to be found. Note that the year 1936 featured three MALE cheerleaders. Do you recognize any of their names?

Can you think of some folks that HAVE to work on Labor Day? Dairy farmers, first responders, law enforcement people, hospital employees, fire fighters and hospitality workers come to mind. Make sure that if you cross paths with any or all of the above, that you say a sincere mange takk to each of them!

Why not have History Alive Project arm you with some Labor Day history so you can share it with others if you get together with friends and family today?

Guessing that you certainly wondered if Norway celebrates a Labor Day; HAP has you covered with those facts as well!

* "Arbeidernes dag" also known as Workers Day, is celebrated
on May 1st with events dedicated to the contribution of
workers to the whole country of Norway.

* In Oslo, you will find a parade down Karl Johansgata starting
at 1 p.m.

NOW YOU KNOW!

The History Alive Project Board has asked me, as HAP President, to answer a question that our Board members as well as myself have been getting asked several times. The question is why most of the Norwegian heritage groups in the area have been chosen and that HAP is not participating in the "Taste of Norway" event being held at the Country C**n Prairie Lutheran Church?

The answer to those who have asked and to those that were wondering, is that History Alive Project was not invited to participate by the organizers.

History Alive Project is pleased that many of you have asked but that is the answer.
