Historical Society of the Westburys The Historical Soceity maintains its collection of historical documents, photos and items in the Co Each autumn the Society holds an informal Open House.

The Historical Society Of The Westburys organized in 1977, is one of the cultural assets of the Villages of Westbury, Old Westbury and the communities of Carle Place and New Cassel. It's headquarters, provided by the Westbury Memorial Public Library is located adjacent to the Children's Library on School Street

The Society hold monthly meetings from September through May, most of which are held o

n Sunday afternoons in the meeting room of the library. The April meeting is the annual business meeting at which Directors are elected. At these meetings, programs on historical topics of local interest are presented by various speakers. Photographs and items from the collection are displayed. The Society is still collecting items pertaining to the history of Westbury, Old Westbury, Carle Place, and New Cassel. The Society welcomes new members whose support and participation will help us continue to present programs of interest to the community

The Historical Society was closed when the library was closed at the height of the pandemic in the spring of 2020. We cancelled our March and April programs, The March program by Linda Russell, "A History of Women in Song", will be held in March 2021 when we hope it will be a live performance. All programs this fall have to be done through Zoom.
Richard Panchyk will do his program "Westbury from Above" which was originally scheduled for April 2020, virtually on October 18 at 2:30 PM. Perspective is everything, and this presentation by author Richard Panchyk will take a unique new look at Westbury, viewing the history of its development through stunning aerial photo views, supplemented with relevant vintage images to tell the story of this very special place.

This program is a musical illumination of the role of women’s lives in society from the 18th century to the 19th Amendment, by which women were given the right to vote. Linda Russell sings a variety of of types of songs which illustrate the history she tells the audience about the changing status of women. Join us for an important, thought-provoking program presented by Cheryl Wills, an award-winning anchor, reporter and journalist for "New York 1 News." She is the author of Die Free: A Heroic Family History, which traces her great-great-great grandfather Sandy Wills’ courageous service in the Civil War as a member of the U.S. Colored Troops. Cheryl made history as the first journalist invited to speak before the United Nations General Assembly for the International Remembrance of Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Sunday, November 17, 2019, 2:30 PM. Historic Quilts and Quilting

Linda Radziminski, an award winning quilter, began collecting antique quilts about twenty years ago. Her collection consists mainly of quilts made in the 1930s and 40s from feed sacks. She will talk about how the quilts were made and what kind of quilt they are. This is
history from a different perspective.

Bill Bleyer's programs are always popular. He returns with this lecture based on his latest book "Long Island and the Sea" published in April, 2019. Mr. Bleyer will discuss the development of submarines and torpedos, the landing of Pan Am clippers in Port Washington and many more facts related to Long Island's maritime history.

Natalie Naylor's slide presentation and talk will give an overview of Long Island's history from the Native Americans and early Dutch and English settlements in the seventeenth century to Levittown and the suburban metropolis in the 21st century. Ms Naylor is a retired history professor at Hofstra University and a Long Island historian.

Sunday, February 17, 2019,at 2:30 PM, the library and historical society will present "Running Scared/ Running Free: Escape to the Promised Land" in honor of Black History Month. This theatrical drama shows the role that Long Island's Native Americans, Quakers and abolitionists played in the underground railroad. The story is told from the point of view of a female slave who flees the south and heads north in her search for freedom. Women Memorializing History: Family Tree to Family Art

Four history inspired women, Allison Clonmell, Judith Burgess, Kathleen Gaskin and Joan Hodges, are presenting this program. Local genealogist Clonmell will discuss how to create a family tree using her own family data. The others point to novel ways to present family history through textiles and art. Quilts and wall hangings will be on display; these help to tell family stories drawing on African and American materials.
