What connects people to land, identity and community?

For many First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, ceremony and tradition are part of everyday life, guiding relationships, teachings and ways of living.

Take a moment to reflect: what traditions connect you to your community?

During National Indigenous History Month, we recognize the importance of ceremony and tradition for First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Ceremonies and cultural practices are deeply connected to:

• The land
• Community and relationships
• Identity and knowledge

These traditions are living practices that continue to guide teachings, values and ways of life today.

They reflect connection, respect and responsibility—core principles that are shared across many Indigenous cultures.

📍 Have you ever visited Pembroke or travelled through the Upper Ottawa Valley?

If so, you’ve been on Treaty land.

May 31 marks the anniversary of the Rideau Purchase (Treaty 27 and 27 ¼). These agreements were signed in 1819 and cover areas along the Ottawa River, including present day Pembroke.

The Rideau Canal, a vital waterway in Upper Canada, was built through this territory after the Treaty was signed.

Learning about treaties helps us better understand the land we live on today and the responsibilities that come with being a treaty person -an important part of reconciliation.
