The Central Iowa Water Works Board of Trustees has initiated Stage 3 of its Water Use Plan, implementing a mandatory lawn watering ban for residential, business, and government customers across the region.

This action is necessary to preserve the region’s drinking water supply as water treatment facilities continue to manage elevated nitrate levels in source waters. While drinking water remains safe and meets all stage and federal standards, the regional water system is operating at the limits of its available treatment resources.

“Conditions have reached a point where mandatory conservation is necessary to protect reliable water service for more than 600,000 people across central Iowa,” said CIWW Executive Director Tami Madsen. “We are using every available tool in our system to maintain safe drinking water. Now we now need every customer’s help in reducing demand to maintain safe drinking water standards.”

To help manage elevated nitrate concentrations in source waters and ensure adequate treatment capacity, the regional system is utilizing all available resources, including the Nitrate Removal Facility, Maffitt Reservoir and Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) wells.

Mandatory Outdoor Water Restrictions
Effective immediately throughout the CIWW service area:
- Lawn watering is prohibited except for newly installed sod or seed placed during the current growing season. Watering should be limited to the minimum amount necessary for establishment.
- Sports fields and golf courses may be irrigated only to the minimum necessary for safety and plant preservation.
- Decorative water features that do not recirculate water should be turned off.
- Customers should immediately discontinue all unnecessary outdoor water use.

Indoor Conservation Strongly Encouraged
Customers are also urged to reduce indoor water use wherever possible by:
- Running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
- Fixing leaking faucets, fixtures and running toilets.
- Turning off water while brushing teeth or shaving.
- Delaying non-essential, high-water-use activities.

The following communities and agencies are affected by this alert: Ankeny, Clive, Johnston, Norwalk, Polk City, Waukee, Des Moines Water Works, Urbandale Water Utility, West Des Moines Water Works, Warren Water and portions of the Xenia Water District. Customers can learn more about the Water Use Plan, current water restrictions and review frequently asked questions (FAQs) by visiting CIWW on Facebook and LinkedIn or at CIWW.gov.

Spring cleanup is taking place next week, June 1-5, so it's important to know what you need to do to have your items picked up. The collection will happen on your regular trash collection day. Make sure to put your items at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on that day. Remember that some items won't be picked up, such as appliances, yard waste, hazardous materials, construction debris, wood, and tires. When you're deciding if something is okay to put out for Spring Cleanup, think about whether two people could lift it.

The City of West Des Moines is partnering with representatives from Jordan Creek Town Center and the fireworks team to prepare for the upcoming 4th of July celebration. On Sunday, May 17, at approximately 9:15 p.m., the fireworks team will conduct a test discharge of several fireworks. This test is crucial to determine the best location for the fireworks display on the day of the event. Our goal is to ensure that families can enjoy the show and have access to information about the best viewing spots. Approximately 15 shells will be discharged between 9:15 and 9:45 p.m.

In previous years, the fireworks celebration has been held at the complex near City Hall; however, this year, it will be relocated to Jordan Creek Town Center. This new location offers more space for families and visitors, allowing a larger audience to come together and enjoy the festivities.

The parade is scheduled for Friday, July 3, followed by the fireworks celebration on Saturday, July 4.

This evening I had the honor of being the emcee for the West Des Moines Cinco de Mayo Celebration at the Valley Junction Farmers Market/Music In The Junction.
This year’s King is Jack Murillo and the Queen is Catherine Gallardo Martinez.
This is a wonderful event that honors the Mexican families that moved to Valley Junction to work for the Rock Island Railroad and the cement plants.
There is a long list of Mexican families that still call West Des Moines home and I am happy to call many of them my friends.
