The police department has been receiving multiple reports of coyote sightings on the island. Residents should be aware of the increasing number of sightings and be cautious;
-Coyotes are opportunistic and eat voles, mice, rabbits, and small mammals. They typically emerge during the dawn/dusk hours. Therefore, residents with small dogs should avoid walking them during the early morning or late afternoon hours.

What should you do if you encounter coyote?
-Stay Calm: Do not run or turn your back on the coyote.
-Make Yourself Big: Stand tall, wave your arms, and make yourself appear larger.
-Use a Firm Voice: Yell at the coyote in a loud, assertive voice.
-Back Away Slowly: If the coyote does not retreat, back away slowly while keeping your eyes on it.

If a coyote is aggressive toward a person, call your local police department immediately and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife when feasible. If you believe a coyote is a direct threat to human safety, report it to the police department via the non-emergency telephone number.

The bad news (or good news to those who like the cold!) is that the day time high temperatures today, will be pretty close to what the temperatures were at midnight overnight. With the wind, it will feel even colder, so if you have outdoor plans today - bundle up!
