Well, West Warwick… it has been a week for all of us.
The biggest storm in Rhode Island history dropped a crazy amount of snow in such a short time that the roads were nearly impossible to keep up with during the height of it.
But our guys were relentless. From day one, they worked nonstop to keep roads as open as possible for emergency services — even pulling operators off their routes to help respond to active calls.
And that was just the beginning.
From there, they pushed countless tons of snow for hours upon hours with very little sleep or rest. They kept going fiercely, many motivated by nothing more than the thought of getting home to hug their loved ones. Some of our own families were without power, and we couldn’t even get to them — all we could do was promise them it would be okay.
They continued clearing roads with the equipment we have on hand — equipment not rated for this volume of snow — but they refused to give up. Trucks broke down left and right, and our amazing Fleet Maintenance team worked tirelessly to get them back up and running in record time. From quick fixes to full rebuilds, welding, fabricating — you name it, they did it. Not just for DPW, but for Police and Fire as well.
When they had downtime, Fleet stepped right out onto the roads to plow, free stuck vehicles, move snow, direct traffic — whatever needed to be done.
The Parks and Rec team was another essential part of this effort. They were out there alongside everyone else, pitching in and getting it done.
Three days in, with no end in sight, help arrived from our friends at Whaley Hollow Farm in Greene and our town’s own International Paving. Seeing we were in dire need of more equipment, they brought trucks and heavy machinery. Morale instantly went through the roof — we could finally see real progress. Thank you, Whaley Hollow and International Paving.
Then more help arrived from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) andPennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)y turMaine National Guardway these men and women put their own lives on hold to come help our town is nothing short of amazing and commendable. West Warwick is extremely grateful.
A huge thank you as well to Millonzi’s for preparing and delivering incredible meals to the shop so the guys could have a hot meal during it all.
Please enjoy these photos — they truly belong in the history books.
