As summer break begins for many students, the West U Police Department reminds drivers to stay alert for children who may be playing or riding bicycles in the city, streets, and near parks.

-Slow down and remain attentive while driving
-Be especially cautious in residential areas and near parks
-Expect the unexpected; children may cross streets unexpectedly or enter roadways suddenly while playing or riding
-Always check carefully for children when backing out of driveways or parking spaces

Extra awareness from drivers helps keep everyone safer during the summer months.

The West University Place Police Department has seen an increase in e-bikes, electric scooters, and other similar devices throughout the city. We’ve also heard the community’s feedback and safety concerns regarding how and where these vehicles are being operated.

We want to help clarify the differences between the various types of vehicles, what is legal and illegal to operate on public streets, and the traffic laws that apply so everyone can ride safely and responsibly.

The graphic below helps explain:
• E-bike classifications and legal operation
• Rules regarding e-scooters
• Vehicles that are not street legal, including dirt bikes, mini bikes, mini motorcycles, and pocket motorcycles

The Police Department will continue monitoring these issues and taking enforcement action when violations are observed. If you see unsafe or illegal operation, report it to the Police Department so officers can respond appropriately.

Parents are encouraged to review the information with their riders and help make sure they understand traffic laws and where these vehicles can legally operate.

WUPD Traffic Stop Connects Suspects to Houston Burglaries

This morning at approximately 3:38 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle traveling with both the front and rear license plates obscured. A traffic stop was conducted for the violation. Upon making contact with the occupants, the officer detected an odor of ma*****na emanating from the vehicle, and the occupants displayed an extremely nervous demeanor.

All occupants were removed from the vehicle and detained while officers conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle. During the search, officers discovered a handgun, burglary tools, a cash register, ma*****na, and a large amount of cash.

Further investigation revealed the suspects were connected to a series of commercial building burglaries in Houston. Joseph Robles was taken into custody for outstanding warrants and is currently charged by WUPD with Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.

An ongoing investigation into the series of Burglary of a Building cases remains with Houston PD

During National Police Week, we pause to honor the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of law enforcement officers across our nation— especially those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
This week is a time to remember the fallen, support the families they left behind, and recognize the men and women who continue to serve our communities every day.
Please join us in taking a moment to reflect, remember, and show appreciation for those who wear the badge.
