What an amazing outcome!
Spring Brook welcomed some special guests to our Thursday night drill this past week.
In June of 2024, Shawn was in his kitchen at home, discussing the night's dinner plans with his daughter when he suddenly collapsed. His daughter had previous training and started CPR while his wife called 911. The first Spring Brook unit was on scene in just a few minutes (although to Shawn's family, it understandably felt like much longer!).
At the time of Shawn's emergency, Spring Brook had ordered a LUCAS automated CPR device through a joint purchase by the Fire District and Spring Brook Fire Company, Inc. but it had not yet been delivered, so mutual aid was provided by East Seneca Fire Company, West Seneca Fire District #4. Their LUCAS device was applied and the AED was utilized, which resulted in Shawn's pulses and circulation being restored.
After a few follow up tests and procedures Shawn is back to his normal lifestyle! He and his wife even reached out to us and wanted to volunteer their time to help with our Fire Company fish fries this year, which we greatly appreciated!
We're so glad that Shawn had a great outcome and the combination of CPR being started quickly and the use of the LUCAS device being used were both important factors. Anyone can learn CPR and it is a great skill to have! You can find a training class at www.redcross.org .
Pictured here is Shawn with his family and several of the Spring Brook members who responded to his emergency, as well as our LUCAS device which we demonstrated for them on Thursday evening.
