On August 25th, the West Point Town Council adopted a new ordinance establishing safety requirements for e-bike riders in our community.

The West Point Police Department asks parents and young riders to take a few minutes to review these new requirements together. Our goal is simple: to help prevent crashes, injuries, and dangerous situations before they happen.

Please read Chief Tim Sawyer’s message for important information about the new ordinance and what it means for e-bike riders in West Point.

Over the past several months, the West Point Police Department and Town of West Point have heard your concerns regarding the operation of e-bikes in our community, particularly involving younger riders.

It’s a big day for West Point Public Schools! With Open House and the Community Pep Rally happening this afternoon, Thompson and Mattaponi Avenues will be busier than usual.

Please use extra caution when traveling in the area and be mindful of increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic. We hope everyone has a safe and fun start to the new school year!

West Point Public Schools are back in session Monday, August 24th! 🚌 As students head back to class and school buses return to our roads, the West Point Police Department is asking everyone to do their part to keep our students and drivers safe.

🛑 KNOW THE LAW
When a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and stop sign extended, STOP means STOP. Knowing when traffic in both directions must stop—and when the rules differ on a divided highway—is important wherever you travel. Check out our “Know the Law: When to Stop for School Buses” graphic for a quick refresher.

🚸 PEDESTRIAN & SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
Drivers aren't the only ones with an important role in school safety. Students should use crosswalks when available, watch carefully for traffic, stay a safe distance from the roadway while waiting for the bus, and always follow the bus driver's instructions. Parents, take a few minutes to review the safety tips in the Virginia Department of Health's “Pedestrian and School Bus Safety” graphic with your children before the first day.

For everyone on the road: slow down, put the phone down, watch for children, and give yourself a little extra time.

Update for the King William County Sheriff's Office National Night Out ☔️

Don’t forget to join us and the West Point Volunteer Fire Department for our Small-Town Night Out on Friday, September 18th at West Point’s Food Trucks by the River!

While the weather is beautiful right now, forecasts continue to show a significant chance of thunderstorms during the time of this evening’s National Night Out event.

After carefully monitoring the forecast and considering the safety of families, children, vendors, volunteers, and first responders, we have made the difficult decision to postpone National Night Out.

The good news is that we have rescheduled the event for SEPTEMBER 27, 2026 from 2-5pm at King William High School. We hope you will join us then for an even bigger community celebration.
