Heading out the door early this morning? Be sure to bundle up, wind chill values bottom out between 10 and 25 degrees below zero. Put on an extra layer and limit your exposure this morning! If it's cold for you, it's cold for your pets too!

The zone of disappointment over disappoints as the dry air wins on the northern fringes of this storm. We've been talking about the dry air for this entire event. It's clear our weather models can't handle this dry air very well. We want to get the forecast right, and nobody wants to be wrong. But we're also trying to predict the future, which isn't easy, and sometimes, it's darn near impossible.

Having said that, we're still expecting a very significant winter storm for southeast NE and extreme southwest IA, northern KS and northwest MO. Blizzard conditions are possible later today near the NE/KS border with several inches of snow forecast. Travel is not advised in that area.

Let's get past the exact amounts and take a deeper dive into this weekend's snow forecast. For more specific information, check out our forecast updates as we post them this afternoon.

Is anyone interested in our first published run at weekend snowfall numbers?

01/02/2025

The ingredients for a strong winter storm are set to come together Saturday into Sunday, where 4+ inches of snow are likely (50-70% chance). Be wary of travelling southeast, with the greatest travel disruptions expected to be in Kansas and Missouri!

We'll see rain and snow ending early this morning. And then there could be isolated flurries this afternoon/eve for northeast NE and western IA. Highs today should reach 29-35. Quiet weather is expected tonight and on New Years Day. Lows tonight 15-24, and highs Wednesday 29-38.

A quick hitting storm system will bring cold rain across our area today. By this afternoon/evening, snow should slowly start to mix in with the rain, first across northeast Nebraska (sometime between 3 and 6 PM), and then further southeast towards the I-80 corridor (8 to 10 pm). There is still some uncertainty with the exact time of precip switchover, and may occur 2-3 hours before the most likely timeframe mentioned above. Warm ground temperatures are also contributing to some uncertainty with how much snow will accumulate on the roads. Should the rain-snow switch over occur later in the evening (especially after 8 pm), little to no ground accumulations are expected. If the rain-snow switchover occurs in the late afternoon/early evening hours, localized areas of 3 to 4 inches of snow will be possible (primarily north of US-30 in northeast Nebraska). After midnight, any remaining precipitation across the region should be light snow showers/flurries. Snow should move east of our area by daybreak on Tuesday.

Overnight lows in the single digits and lower teens coupled with winds of 5 to 15 mph will bring near or below zero wind chills across our area this morning and tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning looks to be the colder of the two, with wind chills potentially as low as -10 in northeast Nebraska and west-central Iowa.

12/12/2024

Freezing rain/drizzle is expected across much of east-central and northeast Nebraska, and western Iowa Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Most locations will see a light glaze of ice to a tenth an inch of ice. This includes Lincoln, Omaha and Norfolk. There is a favored corridor for higher ice accumulations of 0.1 to 0.2 inches that stretches from Columbus to Tekamah, generally along the U.S. Highway 30 corridor. Areas along and south of US-30 will likely see a change in precipitation type Friday night from freezing rain to rain. This likely won't happen until after the evening commute.

12/11/2024

A low pressure system is expected to develop in the central Plains on Friday, bringing a wide variety of precipitation types to eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Far southeast Nebraska and far southwest Iowa will likely see rain. Further north towards the I-80 corridor, freezing rain appears to be the most likely precipitation type at this point in time. Ice accumulations of 0.1 to 0.2 inches will be possible. Light snow will be possible across portions of northeast Nebraska and west-central Iowa. Though this is the most likely scenario, there is still some uncertainty with how far north/south this low will track. A slight shift to the north may keep Lincoln and Omaha metros in rain, and a slight shift to the south may bring accumulating snow as far south as Highway 2. Stay tuned for forecast updates over the next couple of days!

12/10/2024

It will begin to feel a lot more like winter over the next few days. While most locations will see little to no snow today, a few spots could see hazardous travel with a quick 1-2" this evening and overnight. North winds will increase again this evening, ushering even colder air in for Wednesday and Thursday.
