Twenty-five years have passed, but September 11th, 2001, remains a day etched forever into the heart of our nation.

We remember the innocent men, women, and children whose lives were taken. We remember the families who received the call that changed their lives forever. We remember the firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical personnel, military members, and ordinary citizens who ran toward danger while others were running away.

On that day, courage was not measured by the absence of fear, but by the willingness to stand in the face of it.

Thousands never made it home that day. Many more carried the physical and emotional scars of September 11th for the rest of their lives. Their sacrifice must never become just a chapter in a history book.

As law enforcement officers, we understand the weight of the oath to protect and serve. On September 11th, we witnessed that oath carried out with extraordinary courage and sacrifice.

Today, the Howell County Sheriffโ€™s Office pauses to remember those we lost, honor those who served, and stand with the families who continue to carry their loss.

May we never forget the lives lost.
May we never forget the heroes who answered the call.
May we never forget the unity of a nation that stood together.

25 years later, we remember.
25 years later, we honor.
25 years later, we still stand together. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Media Release
Cabool, Missouri
August 28, 2026

On 08-28-2026 at approximately 0107 hours, West Plains police conducted a traffic stop on northbound U.S. Highway 63 near County Road 1820 following a narcotics transaction. During the stop, an officer shot their fi***rm at the suspect, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The suspect then took off, traveling north on U.S. Highway 63. The Howell County Sheriff's Office began pursuing the suspect after he fled the traffic stop in the vehicle.

At approximately 0120 hours Cabool Police were called to assist the Howell County Sheriff's Office with the pursuit that was westbound on U.S. 60. Cabool Officers were able to deploy tire deflation devices on U.S. 60 near Dade Lane. The suspect vehicle struck the tire deflation devices and continued westbound on U.S. 60. At the U.S. 60 and 63 interchange the suspect vehicle turned northbound on U.S. 63. Near the intersection of U.S. 63 and Cedar Bluff Drive, Howell County deputies performed a tactical vehicle intervention on the suspect vehicle rendering it inoperable and in the northbound ditch. The male suspect then exited his vehicle and opened fire on the Howell County deputies and Sheriff Matt Roberts. Subsequently, Howell County returned fire hitting the suspect multiple times before he was taken into custody. The suspect was transported by air ambulance to Cox South Hospital in serious condition where he remains hospitalized.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire. The officer involved shooting part of the investigation is being investigated by the Christian County Sheriff's Office at the request of the Howell and Texas County Sheriff. The Texas County Sheriff's Office, Cabool Police Department, West Plains Police Department, Mountain View Police Department, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted in the incident.

๐Ÿšจ FREE SCHOOL BUS SAFETY SIGNS! ๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿ›‘

The Howell County Sheriffโ€™s Office is giving away 100 FREE School Bus Safety Signs to members of our community!

With school back in session, we want to remind everyone that keeping our children safe is a responsibility we all share. These signs are a great way to help remind drivers to STOP when a school bus has its red lights flashing.

๐Ÿ“ Signs can be picked up in the Howell County Sheriffโ€™s Office lobby.

Please remember:

Only 100 signs are available.
Limit one sign per person, so as many families as possible have an opportunity to receive one.
Signs are first come, first served.
We will update our page when all 100 signs have been claimed.
