Did You Know?

Did you know Kellett Hall survived a fire in 1996?

One of the most recognizable buildings on the Missouri State University-West Plains campus has quite a story to tell. During renovations in 1996, the building sustained heavy damage from a fire that destroyed most of the roof, gutted the third floor and left the remainder of the structure with smoke and water damage. Thanks to the efforts of firefighters and campus personnel, the historic structure was saved and later restored, allowing it to continue serving generations of students. Restoration and renovations to the structure were completed in 1997. During that time, the university also added on to the side of the building with an elevator and stairwell as seen in the photos.

Today, it's hard to imagine campus without Kellett Hall standing proudly at its center. The building's survival is a testament to the resilience of the university and the community that came together during a challenging time.

The Garnett Library will be closed for Labor Day Weekend on Sunday, September 6, and Monday, September 7. We will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on September 8. Our electronic resources are available 24/7 by visiting our website.

: Before It Was a Library...

This photo takes us back to a time when the building we now know as Garnett Library served a very different purpose.

Originally part of the West Plains School District Notice the simple tables and chairs, fluorescent lighting, built-in shelving, and stone accent wall, all reminders of an era before online databases, laptops, and collaborative study spaces became part of everyday campus life.

In 1991, the building was renovated and transformed into Garnett Library, creating a dedicated space for student learning, research, and academic success. While the library has continued to evolve over the years, it's fascinating to see the roots of a building that has served our community for decades.

For more than five decades, Neva has been a welcoming presence, a trusted source of knowledge, and a dedicated champion for library patrons and the community. Her commitment, professionalism, and passion for service have touched countless lives and helped make Garnett Library a special place for generations of visitors.

Fifty-six years of service is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Neva's dedication, hard work, and love for the library. We are grateful for the many ways she has contributed to the success of Garnett Library and enriched our campus community over the years.

Throwback Thursday: Fun in the Basement of Kellett Hall!

to a time when student life at Missouri State University-West Plains included a favorite gathering spot in the basement of Kellett Hall!

Long before today's student spaces, the basement was the place to be. Students could take a break between classes, challenge friends to a game of pool or ping pong, and enjoy a little downtime with classmates. It was more than just a recreation area. It was a place where friendships were formed, memories were made, and campus life came alive.

While the campus has grown and changed through the years, those moments of connection and community remain an important part of the university's story.
