🧡 THE FACE OF HUNGER MAY LOOK DIFFERENT THAN YOU THINK.
According to the 2026 United Way ALICE Report, 49% of Palm Beach County households struggle to make ends meet.
Many are working. But after paying for housing, childcare, transportation, healthcare and other necessities, there simply isn't enough left.
One family receiving food from Feed the Hungry shared how quickly things can change. Both parents were working full-time, carefully budgeting every dollar. They described sitting down each month to pay the rent first, then calculating what was left for groceries—often finding there was very little, or nothing at all.
On some weeks, they would stretch meals by skipping breakfast or relying on inexpensive, filling foods just to get through. When their car needed repairs, everything shifted again. The repair bill meant the grocery budget disappeared entirely.
They explained that the hardest part wasn’t just the hunger—it was the stress of constantly having to choose what to go without.
That’s what ALICE (asset limited, income constrained, employed) looks like.
A car repair. A medical bill. A rent increase. One unexpected expense can turn an already-tight budget into an impossible choice.
Sometimes, groceries are what gets sacrificed.
