I grew up on Dolly Parton's music. I imagine a lot of you did too.

What always struck me about her wasn't just the talent, though there was plenty of that. It was her heart. She never forgot where she came from, and she spent her life making sure other people had a little easier road than she did, especially kids who just needed a book and a reason to believe in themselves.

Through her Imagination Library, she put books in the hands of millions of children who might never have had them otherwise. Asked about her philanthropy, she once put it simply: "I just give from my heart." That's who she was. No strategy, just heart.

That's a value I carry into public service every day: everyone deserves a fair shot, and you give because it's right, not for credit.

Palm Beach County, and the world, are a little dimmer today. Thank you, Dolly.
