May is American Wetlands Month! This annual celebration was established in 1991 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to highlight the importance of these incredible ecosystems.

Some notable functions of wetlands here in South Florida include:

💧Flood Prevention: Wetlands have unique soil and plants adapted to the heavy rainfall we experience in South Florida. These ecosystems act like natural sponges, minimizing flood risks in surrounding residential and urban areas.

💧Water Quality: Wetland plants help to trap sediment and absorb excess nutrients, serving as natural filters and improving water quality. Wetlands can provide drinking water directly (like Grassy Waters!) or help to recharge the aquifer for groundwater sources.

💧Carbon Storage: Wetland habitats are some of the greatest carbon storage areas worldwide. The vegetation helps to pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and flooded conditions lead to slower rates of decomposition, ultimately helping with climate concerns.

Did you know? Worldwide, the services that wetlands provide have been estimated to be worth $14.9 trillion!

Today is the International Day for Biodiversity, a reminder to celebrate the interconnectedness of all life on Earth.🌎

The healthy functioning of our planet relies on the coexistence of all living things, from individual species to entire ecosystems. We rely on biodiversity for our basic needs; it is essential for the availability and accessibility of clean air, water, and food.

This year’s theme is “acting locally for global impact”, serving as a reminder that individual efforts collectively contribute to a worldwide outcome. Impact starts where you are, and no action is too small.

🔍 Look & Learn: explore where you are
🤝 Connect & Act: join local community efforts
📣 Share: inspire others with your experiences

Did you know? Florida ranks #7 in the United States for biodiversity with over 4,000 animal species recorded!

The 2026 City Nature Challenge results are in…

Globally, over 100,000 people participated in this bioblitz, recording over 3 million observations of more than 76,000 different species.

Team South Florida, which includes Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Collier, and Monroe counties, ranked #8 worldwide in terms of species observed - 3,876 in total! 🌼🌳🦉

At Grassy Waters, 694 species were recorded through 2,230 observations. The five most common species were:

1. Southern Wax Myrtle
2. Satin Rupela
3. Brown Anole
4. Buttonbush
5. Pond Apple

Thank you to all who contributed to this citizen science effort – including our colleagues and partners at the City of West Palm Beach Office of Sustainability, the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society, Florida Atlantic University’s Wilkes Honors College, and Audubon Everglades!

Stay tuned for next year’s City Nature Challenge taking place April 30-May 3, 2027.
