Training Update for June 2018

Please find below, a list of upcoming trainings/events offered through the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and/or our partners. This information is being offered to you for skill development or professional development purposes, and to make you feel more comfortable should you be asked to respond.

You are not required to take any of these courses however, Orientation, Background Screening, and FEMA IS100 and 700 are all required to be deployed to assist in a real world event.
1. MRC Orientation: Learn the basics of the MRC, meet the coordinator, discuss volunteer roles and duties, and have your picture taken for your ID badge.
a. When: Tuesday, May 22nd from 6pm-7:00pm

2. NATURAL DISASTER AWARENESS FOR CAREGIVERS AWR-308 – This 4-hour course is designed to enhance the caregiver’s awareness of vulnerability factors associated with senior citizens. Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to natural hazards. Factors such as physical limitations, mental ailments, and medication requirements are issues of concern for caregivers of senior citizens.
a. When: Tuesday, June 12th from 1:30pm -5:30pm

3. 2018 EMS Providers Symposium – The purpose of this fast paced, highly informative event is to focus on education and interoperability of both EMS and hospitals thus driving improvement and leading to better patient outcomes. This event will feature cutting edge content such as new patient care strategies and techniques in the field of cardiac care, stroke management, and severe trauma among others.

4. MGT-319 Bioterrorism: Mass Prophylaxis Preparedness and Planning : ( MGT-319)
This course is a guide for local health officials and their partners in the local public health system to coordinate plans to provide mass distribution of pharmaceuticals for the jurisdiction as they relate to the Division of Strategic National Stockpile (DSNS) Program. The purpose of this course is to enhance a jurisdiction’s preparedness and emergency response efforts by developing (or revising) a plan addressing an all-hazards approach towards mass prophylaxis.
a. When: Monday July 9th AND Tuesday, July 10th 8:30 – 5pm both days
b. Where: Florida Dept. of Health in Broward County

6. FEMA Incident Command Courses ICS100 and 700 (online) – These two courses are part of the basic requirements for the Medical Reserve Corps. The courses will equip first responders and first receivers with the skills needed to understand the Incident Command Structure under which all Medical Reserve Corps volunteers will operate under during a declared emergency/disaster.

1. Stop the Bleed Training: Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. The following primary principles of trauma care will be covered:
• Ensure your own safety
• The ABCs of Bleeding
A – Alert – call 9-1-1
B – Bleeding – find the bleeding injury
C – Compress – apply pressure to stop the
bleeding by:
o Cover the wound with a clean cloth and apply
pressure by pushing directly on it with both hands, OR
o Use a tourniquet, OR
o Pack (stuff) the wound with gauze or a clean
cloth and then apply pressure with both hands.

3. MGT404 Sports and Special Events Incident Management Course
This course develops athletic department staffs, facility management personnel, campus public safety personnel, emergency response supervisors, and others involved in sports/special event management to better manage incidents that could occur during an event.

3. Everbridge/SERVFL Communications Drill
a. When: Thursday, December 8th
A SERVFL/Everbridge Alert will be sent to all MRC Volunteers requesting support. We ask that when you receive this alert, please click “Confirm Receipt” if you receive via email, or press the appropriate number if you receive via phone call. This is a simulation exercise which tests our ability to issue an alert through SERVFL/Everbridge and your ability to respond.

2. MRC Communications Drill in conjunction with the Operation No Fly Zone Exercise
a. When: Thursday evening, July 28th
A SERVFL/Everbridge Alert will be sent to all MRC Volunteers requesting support. 3. MGT-324 Campus Emergencies Prevention, Response and Recovery: ( MGT-324)
This course provides participants with an understanding of and ability to navigate through the difficult aspects of dealing with campus emergencies involving natural or manmade events, including acts of violence. The course consists of small, problem-based, integrated group activities that require a coordinated, integrated approach to solve. Through tabletop scenarios, course participants will observe a developing incident and respond in a manner consistent with currently established campus and jurisdictional emergency operations procedures.

St Lucie Nuclear Power Plant Exercise: Test our ability to receive, decontaminate, monitor and care for St. Lucie County evacuees in a safe and orderly manner. MRC volunteers will work the Potassium Iodine (KI) station and simulate the act of administering the medication to the evacuees and monitor them for any adverse reaction.

2. RAD-NUC Responder Operations Customized for Population Monitoring
This course is designed to teach practical skills to rank and file first responders or emergency workers who have had only fundamental or awareness level training about the radiological – nuclear threat; so that they can safely perform the population monitoring mission at an emergency reception following a radiological – nuclear incident.
When: Tuesday, February 3, 2015

3. AWR-136 Essentials of Community Cyber Security:
This half-day lecture training course places the issues of cyber security in a community context and demonstrates how cyber attacks by terrorist organizations can impact, prevent, and/or stop business operations, and emergency responses. The lecture covers cyber threats, vulnerabilities and countermeasures, explains how computer systems and networks are vulnerable, and how this vulnerability affects the organization. Students attending this course receive a Certificate of Completion.

4. PER-304 Social Media for natural Disaster Response and Recovery:
This awareness-level course enhances the participants’ abilities to build up an organization’s communication strategy for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills of: - Social media and its uses - The current tools, methods, and models to properly make use of social media for crisis communication Participants will take part in facilitator-led activities that challenge them to identify effective social media platforms for their organizations to utilize during crises situations.

5. PER-211: Medical Management of CBRNE Events
Participants completing this program will be able to properly perform patient triage, decontamination, treatment, and transportation in the event of exposure to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) weapons. The course consists of facilitated discussions, small group exercises, hands-on activities, and task-oriented practical applications. Course participants will use both state-of-the-art adult and pediatric human patient simulators to promote critical thinking skills while utilizing the RAPID-Care concept.
When: Monday, March 23rd and Tuesday, March 24th
