When every second counts, training can make the difference.

West Orange firefighter/EMTs are strengthening their lifesaving skills through advanced medical training covering stroke recognition, major trauma, bleeding control, behavioral health and more.

Fire Chief Nicholas Gillo says the department has already seen the importance of early recognition firsthand — including a response in which firefighters helped identify a stroke and ultimately saved a resident’s life.

Learn how grant-funded training and a partnership with University Hospital are helping West Orange firefighters prepare for critical medical emergencies and provide residents with the best care possible.

Two recent calls from this summer included a pick up truck fire, as well as a car into a building! Thankfully only minor injures were reported.

👏👏👏👏 West Orange Fire Department is honored to be recognized!

We recently visited West Orange Fire & EMS to celebrate a remarkable “great save” and thank the team on the front lines. Drs. Mehta and Shapiro joined the visit highlighting the critical role of rapid recognition and coordinated teamwork in prehospital care. The EMS crew was thrilled to hear about the patient's positive outcome! Thank you, West Orange Fire & EMS, for your dedication to our community.

Captain Carmine Ruta was hired by the West Orange Fire Department in July of 2006. Captain Ruta spent 9 years as a firefighter before being promoted to Captain in November of 2016. Captain Ruta served as the Treasurer of FMBA Locals 28 and 228. Captain Ruta spent time as the Captain of Ladder 1 before finishing his career as the Captain of Engine 3. Captain Ruta will be sorely missed, and we congratulate Captain Ruta on his well-earned retirement.
I would like to add to this post by saying, Captain Ruta was an expert at dodging the camera and I had to do some serious digging for pictures! I hope you forgive me for posting Carm!

WOFD was on scene yesterday at 212 Park Place in Orange on a 5 alarm fire yesterday. West Orange arrived on the first mutual aid assignment and assisted in pulling lines into the D exposure. Upon arrival to the scene the fire was already a 3rd alarm. West Orange Firefighters Foundation offers our sincerest condolences to the victims families.
