In 2021, the State of New Jersey enacted a law that requires all water providers to share with customers the material of the utility-owned and customer-owned service lines that lead to their property, notify customers with service lines that are lead or galvanized steel, and replace them by 2031.

To meet this goal, New Jersey American Water has launched the Lead Service Line Replacement Program. NJAW will begin service line identification canvassing with the support of CDM Smith beginning on or about May 18, 2026. Canvassing is expected to take 16-18 weeks as there are nearly 7400 customer side services that are unknown.

Please be aware that all inspectors will wear co-branded (NJAW and CDM Smith), high visibility logo vests and will have NJAW issued ID badges. Inspectors will introduce themselves and the program and will then ask to enter the customer’s home to inspect the water service where it enters into the home (typically in a basement or crawl space). The inspector will take exterior photos of the house and house number and interior photographs of the service material and record the pipe material identified on a tablet. Inspections generally take 15-minutes or less and at no time will residents be asked for money. Any customer that prefers not to have an internal inspection completed will be directed to alternatives to the inspections including self-reporting.

Property owners can also schedule appointments and inquire about the program by calling CDM Smith directly at 732-590-4700.

Not too many Mayors can boast having a Thomas Edison National Historical Park on their Main Street and an amphitheater in the center of their Town with a 9/11 Memorial structure.

This is a heartfelt Thank You to Senator John McKeon for participating in the 9/11 25-year Candlelight Vigil AND for the funding that allowed for the extraordinary amount of time and effort Engineering Director Carballo and DPW Supervisor Jim Latore exerted to prepare the OSPAC site for such a commemorative event.

Special thanks to my Administrative Assistant Melanie Schowalter, Business Administrator and former Fire Chief Pete Smeraldo and Communications Officer Joe Fagan for orchestrating such a lovely Program beginning with the official posting of the Colors with Police Chief Feula and Fire Chief Gillo and ending with God Bless America sung by Corporal Harvey Lott, USMC.

As Mayor, it was my honor and privilege to acknowledge the courage of the WO Police Department's search and rescue mission response and I actually felt the suppressed emotions of sadness, fear and grief in Firefighter Omar Guzman's recount.

And, how fitting to hear Deb Calimano's perspective as a flight attendant and how overarching flight attendant first responder training kicked in for Kandace Sparks to help her investment banking colleagues evacuate the second tower.

This is West Orange.

9/11β€” National Day of Remembrance

On this day the Township of West Orange joins communities across our nation in observing the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93. We honor the extraordinary courage of the first responders, members of our military, and ordinary citizens who answered tragedy with selfless acts of bravery and compassion.

For West Orange, September 11th remains deeply personal. Our community mourned neighbors, friends, and loved ones while our police officers, firefighters, emergency personnel, and residents responded in the difficult days and weeks that followed.
