For over a century, the West Orange Public School District has been a cornerstone of education in the community. With a rich history that dates back to 1895, the district has grown to encompass twelve remarkable schools. Among them are seven neighborhood elementary schools, one central sixth middle school, two traditional middle schools, one high school campus, and even a pre-school program. Attra

cting a diverse student body of over 7,000 students who speak more than 50 languages in the home, the district represents a microcosm of the global community. This blend of cultures, socio-economic and religious groups fosters a harmonious learning environment that contributes to the success of every student. It is this diversity that serves as a tremendous strength for the district and prepares students to be leaders in an increasingly interconnected world.

Congratulations to West Orange High School senior Marcus Jackson ('26) on being named the 2025-26 Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Selected from nearly 500,000 high school soccer players across the country, Marcus joins an elite group of past winners and cements his place among the most accomplished student-athletes in school history.

What makes this recognition even more special is that it celebrates far more than athletic success. The Gatorade Player of the Year award recognizes excellence in athletics, academics, and character, and Marcus embodies all three. Whether representing West Orange on the soccer field, maintaining a strong GPA in the classroom, volunteering throughout the community, or mentoring the next generation of players, Marcus has consistently set the standard for what it means to be a student-athlete.

πŸŽ“ ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: David Bien-Aime (WOHS Class of 2022) continues to make his mark in journalism after being selected as a recipient of the prestigious NYU Ed Bradley Journalism Fellowship.

A graduate of Redwood Elementary School and Edison/Liberty Middle School, David got his start in student journalism as a writer and copy editor for 'The Pioneer' while also competing on the WOHS spring track team. He later served as Editor-in-Chief of The Montclarion and is now being recognized through a fellowship that supports the next generation of diverse voices in journalism.

His advice for current Mountaineers: β€œKeep setting goals for yourself and don’t stay complacent. Start with small goals for yourself and use it as fuel for motivation. Keep working hard, somebody will notice.”

Hazel Elementary was recently awarded a $2,000 grant from the PSEG Foundation through the Sustainable Jersey for Schools program to support the creation of the Hazel Avenue Rain Garden. This rain garden will help manage stormwater runoff, support local ecosystems, and create a hands-on learning opportunity for students for years to come.

The project takes its next big step this Sunday, June 14, as students, families, staff, and community members come together to help plant the garden at the corner of Hazel Avenue and Birch Road from 9:30am to 12:00pm (all are welcome!)

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this grant possible. πŸŒΏπŸ’™

Just days before graduation, the West Orange High School Class of 2026 returned to where it all began. πŸŽ“ πŸ₯Ή

Seniors walked the halls of Gregory, Hazel Avenue, Kelly, Mount Pleasant, Redwood, St. Cloud, and Washington Elementary Schools as part of the district's cherished "Clap Out" tradition. Along the way, they were welcomed by cheering students, reunited with former teachers, and reflected on the journey that brought them to this moment.

For the graduating seniors, it was a chance to revisit the classrooms and hallways that helped shape them. For today's elementary students, it was a glimpse of what lies ahead. And for everyone in between, it was a powerful reminder that while graduation marks the end of one chapter, the West Orange story often begins in these very hallways.
