P is for Post-Election Audits! The purpose of post-election audits is to inspect the documents and procedures used in preparation for, and during, an election. These audits provide an extra layer of security to our elections by ensuring that results are accurate. The Michigan Bureau of Elections, county/local clerks, and the public work together during the audit process. Each audit includes a hand count of the ballots cast.

O is for Oath of Office! A person taking the oath of office promises to uphold the Michigan constitution, the U.S. Constitution, and the duties of their position. While elected officials, such as County Commissioners, take the oath before assuming office, the practice is not just for newly elected individuals. All appointed officers must also take an oath. For example, all election inspectors on election day promise to carry out their duties according to law.

N is for Non-Partisan! City-level elections in Ottawa County are non-partisan elections. In these elections, candidates do not declare a political party. For voters, this means that no party name is listed next to a candidate's name on the ballot. Only three cities in Michigan have partisan elections: Ann Arbor, Ionia, and Ypsilanti. All judicial elections in Ottawa County are also non-partisan.

M is for MOVE Voters! The Military and Overseas Voters Empowerment Act (MOVE) was signed into law in 2009 to help more US Citizens vote even if they are not currently in the US. This act includes: all active, uniformed service members, military spouses and dependents, Merchant Marines stationed inside or outside the United States, and civilians who reside or temporarily live overseas. This piece of legislation allows some US citizens the right to request an electronic absent voter ballot, to be emailed or faxed to the voter.

L is for Logic and Accuracy Tests! Did you know that Ottawa County is unique in that we own the election equipment & share the costs with our Local Clerks! This means that the County conducts our own LATs! About a month before each election, our office goes to each jurisdiction that will be holding an election to test their machines for accuracy. We look at the markings on a ballot, seal numbers, and test for any common errors. These meetings are open to the public so feel free to stop by our next L & A to check out the process!
