West Norriton Township

West Norriton Township West Norriton Township is a township in Montgomery County, PA
Page isn’t monitored 24/7. Call 911 for emergencies!

We started when William Penn’s son, William, sold Williamstadt to Isaac Norris and William Trent in 1704. In 1730, the court agreed that Williamstadt should be a township and the Township of Norriton was created. Norriton included what is today West Norriton, Norristown, and East Norriton. In 1812, Norriton was divided and the Borough of Norristown was established. On March 9, 1909, the Township of Norriton was again divided, this time into West Norriton and East Norriton. On March 9, 2009, both townships celebrated their centennial.

Remembering Chet Wurtz

West Norriton Township is saddened to learn of the passing of longtime History Committee member Frank Chester “Chet” Wurtz.

Chet had a deep appreciation for West Norriton and took great pride in documenting the people, places, and events that shaped our community. His dedication to preserving our Township’s story ultimately helped lead to the writing of the History of West Norriton, ensuring that generations of residents would have a record of the community we call home.

Through his many years of service on the History Committee, Chet helped preserve not simply dates and photographs, but the stories and memories that make West Norriton special.

We are grateful for Chet’s years of dedicated service and for the lasting contribution he made to preserving West Norriton’s history. His work will continue to benefit our community for generations to come.

On behalf of West Norriton Township, we extend our deepest condolences to Chet’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Thank you, Chet, for helping preserve our history. Your contribution to West Norriton will not be forgotten.

September 11 — We Will Never Forget

Today, West Norriton Township joins communities across our nation in remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We honor the innocent lives taken, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless individuals who demonstrated extraordinary courage, compassion, and selflessness in the hours, days, and years that followed.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember those we lost and the families whose lives were forever changed. We also remember the unity and strength Americans showed in the face of tragedy.

May we continue to honor their memory through service, kindness, and a commitment to our neighbors and community.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

West Norriton Township Mourns the Passing of Former Township Manager Joseph J. Hein

It is with great sadness that West Norriton Township shares the passing of former Township Manager Joseph J. “Joe” Hein, who passed away on September 8 at the age of 83.

Joe dedicated much of his life to serving West Norriton Township and our community. He began his career with the Township in 1969 in the Public Works Department and worked his way through the organization, ultimately becoming Township Manager in 1997. He served as Manager until his retirement in 2006.

His service to West Norriton did not end with retirement. Joe returned to serve as Interim Township Manager in 2012 and later served as a Township Commissioner. He also continued giving back to the organization through his longtime service as Chairman of the West Norriton Township Civil Service Commission.

For those who had the privilege of knowing and working with Joe, his impact went far beyond the positions he held. He was firm but thoughtful, cared deeply about Township employees, and had a tremendous love for West Norriton and the community he called home for more than 55 years.

Many current and former Township employees were hired by Joe or had the opportunity to work alongside him. He played an important role in creating the family atmosphere and commitment to public service that remain part of West Norriton Township today.

Joe was a dedicated public servant, colleague, mentor, and friend. His contributions to West Norriton will not be forgotten, and his legacy will continue through the community and organization he spent so many years serving.

On behalf of the Board of Commissioners, Township staff, and the entire West Norriton community, we extend our deepest condolences to Joe’s wife, Marilyn, his children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends.

Thank you for a lifetime of service to West Norriton, Joe. You will be greatly missed.
