West New York Board of Education Introduces and Approves
Resolution Urging Congress to Restore DACA; Children First Team Lead Charge to ensure New Jersey Congressional Delegation also
West New York, N.J. — The West New York Children First Team led the charge in ensuring that the West New York Board of Education passed a vital resolution in support of the 22,000 New Jersey residents and the 800,000 DACA enrollees across the United States who are American in all but documentation.
On Wednesday, February 7, 2018 the West New York Board of Education held a regularly scheduled meeting at the West New York Middle School, where Trustee Jonathan Castañeda introduced a resolution urging members of Congress to take immediate action to restore the protections and educational opportunities provided to children under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The motion was seconded by Board President Adam Parkinson and passed with a vote of 7-0-2, with two Board of Education Members abstaining from the vote.
“I am proud to sponsor this resolution in support of Dreamers across the country and urge our Members of Congress to pass common sense legislation that will provide my friends, neighbors, and students across the country a chance at the American Dream,” discussed Jonathan Castaneda. “The concept of America – the continuous experiment of democracy – is not only founded and engrained in immigration, but perhaps in and of itself the sole true manifestation of what America is all about.”
The West New York Children First Team last year introduced a resolution to urge the New Jersey Legislature to support a bill presented by Senator Brian Stack that protected local entities who stood by their vulnerable populations. They also introduced a resolution to make all West New York Schools “Safe Zones” thereby ensuring the rights of all students regardless of immigration status the opportunity to access the thorough and efficient education they are entitled to.
“I thank Trustee Castañeda for bringing this resolution forward and I too am proud to support students across New Jersey and the United States,” discussed Adam Parkinson. “I hope our Congressional Delegation and all Members of Congress heed the call to support doing what is right for the future of our nation.”
Trustees Castañeda, Fernandez, Mendoza, Morel, Portillo, Vice President Gonzalez and President Parkinson voted in favor of the resolution with Trustees Cheng and Scheurle abstaining.
The members of the West New York Children First Team are Jonathan Castañeda, Maite M. Fernandez, Damarys Gonzalez, Dennise Mejia, Jose Ruben Mendoza, David Morel, and Adam Parkinson.
