Hydrant flow testing is currently underway throughout the City of West Monroe, and in this video, Fire Chief Daniel Overturf explains why this important process matters to our community. Hydrant flow testing helps support the flushing process by removing corrosion, scale, and sediment that naturally build up in water lines over time while also ensuring hydrants are functioning properly and ready when they’re needed most.

Residents may notice a temporary drop in water pressure during testing, and in some cases, water discoloration may occur. These are normal, temporary effects and should clear up quickly. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Chief of Fire Prevention Charles Hugghins at (318) 397-0758.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as crews continue this important work to help maintain reliable infrastructure and public safety services for our community. 💧🚒

National EMS Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the dedicated emergency medical professionals who provide lifesaving care and support to our community every day. Whether responding to emergencies, delivering critical pre-hospital care, or serving alongside other public safety partners, EMS personnel play an essential role in keeping our community safe. EMS Week also serves as a reminder of the collaboration and teamwork that strengthen patient care and improve outcomes.

This year’s National EMS Week theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” highlights the impact of partnerships between EMS professionals, healthcare systems, dispatchers, public safety agencies, and the communities they serve.

At the West Monroe Fire Department, that commitment is reflected in a highly trained team consisting of 1 Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), 37 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), 3 Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs), and 4 Paramedics. In addition, five team members are currently furthering their education through Paramedic Programs.

The City of West Monroe is grateful for the EMTs, paramedics, and emergency medical professionals whose commitment, compassion, and service make a difference each and every day. Thank you for answering the call and caring for our community!🚑

The West Monroe Fire Department will conduct hydrant flow tests on all fire hydrants located throughout the city limits beginning Monday, May 18 through Thursday, June 11.

Flowing the fire hydrants assists with the flushing process and helps remove corrosion, scale and sediment that build up throughout the year.

Residents should be aware there will be a temporary drop in water pressure during testing, and discolored water sometimes results following flow tests. Both issues should clear up quickly.

If you have any questions, please contact Chief of Fire Prevention Charles Hugghins at (318) 397-0758.

May is Drowning Prevention Month.

In 2024, Louisiana ranked 3rd in the nation for drownings among children ages 0–14. This is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of water safety education and supervision.

As families spend more time around pools, lakes, and rivers this summer, please take a moment to review water safety practices with your children and loved ones. Simple steps like constant supervision, swim lessons, life jackets, and learning CPR can make all the difference.

Together, we can help prevent drowning tragedies and keep our children safe. 💙
