We are under a Heat Advisory today, and extreme heat can have a significant impact on your electricity usage. ☀️

We understand that many customers are concerned about higher utility bills and have questions about whether those increases are connected to the Google data center project.

The answer is no. The Google data center is still under construction and is not operational. It is not currently operating as a significant electric load on the WMU system.

Weather is one of the biggest factors affecting energy usage. When temperatures remain in the 90s for several days, especially when nights remain hot, air-conditioning systems run longer and use more electricity, even when your daily habits haven’t changed.

When comparing bills, look at your kWh usage, not just the dollar amount. Higher kWh means more electricity was used during that billing period.

A few ways to save energy during extreme heat:

• Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible.
• Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.
• Make sure doors and windows are closed when your AC is running.
• Avoid using ovens and other heat-producing appliances during the hottest hours.
• Use ceiling fans to help you feel more comfortable without lowering the thermostat.
• Check or replace your HVAC filter regularly.

During this week’s City Council meeting, Mayor Marco McClendon took time to address recent reports and questions surrounding the Google Data Center project in West Memphis.

Mayor McClendon invited WMU General Manager Bob Atkins to speak directly with citizens and council members, providing additional context about how the utility operates and outlining the benefits the data center project brings to our community.

Those benefits include Google’s $25 million investment in West Memphis, additional tax support for local schools, and Google’s financial responsibility for the infrastructure needed to serve the facility.

Atkins also addressed what the project means for WMU customers and reinforced an important point: the data center will not increase customers’ utility bills.

‼️WMU Clarifies: Google Data Center Will Not Impact Customer Utility Bills Following Recent Reports

West Memphis Utilities (WMU) is clarifying its role in the development of Google’s data center in West Memphis following recent reporting regarding the costs associated with serving large data center projects in Arkansas.

WMU customers will not see an increase in their utility bills because of the Google data center. Google is financially responsible for the utility infrastructure required specifically to serve its West Memphis data center, and those costs are not being passed on to WMU’s existing customers.

It is also important to distinguish WMU from Entergy Arkansas. WMU is an independent, public power utility and does not purchase its power from Entergy. WMU’s relationship with Google and the infrastructure being constructed to serve the West Memphis project are separate from Entergy Arkansas’ agreements, operations and regulatory matters involving its data center customers.

WMU currently has one electric line remaining to be constructed specifically for the Google data center. As with the other infrastructure requirements associated with the project, Google has made payments to cover the costs of the infrastructure needed to serve its facility.

To date, Google has been financially responsible for the utility infrastructure WMU has constructed or is constructing specifically for the data center. This approach will continue as WMU completes the remaining infrastructure required for the project.

WMU recognizes the importance of economic development in West Memphis while maintaining its responsibility to protect the interests of existing customers.

“Our responsibility is first and foremost to the customers we serve,” Bob Atkins, General Manager of WMU. “We can welcome new economic development to West Memphis while also making sure our existing customers are protected.”

WMU will continue to provide accurate information about the project and its impact on the West Memphis community as development progresses.

Please note that this is an updated reminder regarding our upcoming office closure. Please ignore any previous posts or alerts that referenced the initial closure dates.

Our office will be closed October 1–2 as we transition to our new Customer Information System with SpryPoint. We are open during our regular business hours today and will remain open as scheduled until the transition closure.

During the October 1–2 closure, we will not be able to accept payments in person or online. Online payment services will be temporarily unavailable. We also will not be able to process new service requests, move-ins or move-outs.

💳 If you need to make a payment around that time of the month, please make your payment by Wednesday, September 30, or wait until after Monday, October 5, when the new system launches.

To help avoid any interruption, please complete payments and any start/stop service requests by September 30 or after October 5.

⚠️ Sunday Morning Power Restoration Update - PLEASE READ.

We’re happy to share that all residential customers should now have power restored. The only remaining work is in the area of businesses along Missouri Street, and crews expect to complete that work later today.

We know how difficult this situation has been for so many of you. This was a quick, powerful storm, and we could not have predicted the amount of damage it would cause in such a short amount of time. We are incredibly thankful for the quick response and dedication of our crews and employees, some of whom worked more than 13 hours straight to restore power to our community.

We also empathize with our 100,000+ neighbors in Memphis who are facing the possibility of being without power for days. We know how challenging and overwhelming that can be, especially for families with children, elderly loved ones and pets.

Just like we do after every major outage, we will evaluate what happened and look at what we can do to lessen the impact of storms like this in the future. We know we cannot always prevent damage to our system, but we are always looking for better solutions to strengthen our infrastructure and restore power as quickly as possible when damage does occur.

Power Restoration Update

Approximately 300 customers remain without power at this time, and we expect portions of those affected to have power restored within minutes.

Our crews are actively addressing three spans of downed wire. This work requires our lineworkers to climb poles and work from bucket trucks to safely make the necessary repairs.

Because the remaining outages are isolated across several different areas, each repair will restore power to a portion of the customers still affected. We expect almost all customers to have power restored within the next four hours. We certainly hope it doesn’t take that long, and our crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore service sooner.

📢 Updated Notice: Temporary Office Closure for Our New Customer Information System

Please note: This is an update to our previous closure notice. Our transition dates have changed to October 1–2 to help ensure a smooth and seamless changeover to our new Customer Information System with SpryPoint.

We’re excited to bring our customers more ways to pay their bills and better tools to manage their accounts. To prepare for the transition, our office will be open during regular business hours on August 27 and 28. The office will instead be closed Thursday, October 1, and Friday, October 2.

During the October 1–2 closure:

• We will not be able to accept payments in person or online.
• Online payment services will be temporarily unavailable.
• We will not be able to process new service requests, move-ins or move-outs.
