Monday Drill--Water Supply w/ CTFD

Our Monday night drill on June 15 was conducted with our partners at Cumru Twp and Western Berks FDs. The exercise was conducted in the parking lot of the Gouglersville Fire Co in Cumru and focused on the conduct of tanker shuttles to provide water in non-hydrant areas.

The tankers involved were TSFRS Tanker 85, Cumru Twp Tankers 42 and 42-1, and Western Berks Tanker 18. The evolution also included set up of two portable tanks, with an engine drafting and supplying another engine with an elevated master stream. Each tanker dropped its payload into the tanks, which were connected by a jet pump siphon. After unloading, the tankers drove to a refill site to obtain another suppl of water which was then conveyed back to the flow site.

As an additional note, we got our first look at Cumru's newest tanker, a 3000-gallon twin to their existing tanker, and Western Berks' new engine, equipped with an articulating 50' boom master stream.

Four LODDs---June 11-14

It's been a rougher than usual four-day stretch for the US Fire Service as four separate Line of Duty Deaths were recorded from June 11 thru 14. This continues to illustrate just how dangerous it is to do what we do on a routine basis, and in so many different ways and scenarios.

TSFRS would like to express our sincerest condolences to the families, friends and fire service communities in mourning as a result of these tragic losses.

Firefighter Ryan Zwick of the Cincinnati OH FD passed away from service-related occupational cancer on June 11.

Then on June 12, Firefighter Juan Antonio Smith of the Rockdale County FD in Georgia was killed in an accident when his ladder truck rolled over during a response to a reported structure fire.

Asst. Chief Wayne Woodbury of the Searsmont VFD in Maine died on June 14 as a result of an explosion during a lumber yard fire on May 15. This fire and explosion also claimed another firefighter's life that day. AC Woodbury had been hospitalized since the event. Other members continue to be hospitalized.

Also on June 14, Lt. Isia Huerta of the Odessa TX FD was killed when interior fire conditions deteriorated rapidly as personnel were fighting a trailer fire. Several other members were injured during the incident.

Kitchen Fire, Lincoln Park Apts

Just after midnight on Thursday morning June 11, a reported fire in the kitchen of an apartment in the Lincoln Park Apts complex on West Wyomissing Blvd resulted in the dispatch of TSFRS Engine 85, Wyomissing Ladder 79, Western Berks Fire Ladder 18, Shillington Engine 36, Cumru Twp Engine 42, Kenhorst Engine 69-1, Western Berks EMS and Exeter Station 25 for RIT service.

E85 arrived and reported a three-story end of row apartment with nothing evident from the exterior. L79 positioned behind E85, and Capt 85 advised all subsequent units to stage on Amherst Ave. Personnel from E85 deployed a 200' attack hose and entered the building. Here they found that the pressure cooker had been on fire, was mostly extinguished with extension to the cabinets and wall which was extinguished with a water fire extinguisher. E85 and L79 personnel checked for extension and having found none, Command held the assignment to units on location and recalled the balance. Command also requested that the Township Fire Marshal (FM 43) be dispatched to the scene.

Mutual aid personnel accessed and evaluated the attached apartments. Where residual smoke was found, it was vented using fans. After venting the atmosphere was metered and determined to be safe. Several occupants were also evaluated by EMS personnel with no transport required.

When all tasks were completed and equipment secured, the remaining apparatus was released except E85 who remained to assist with the investigation, which was completed by Chief 85, FM43 and Deputy 85.

Library Day at Station 85

TSFR with the support of with our friends at the Spring Township Libraries and Parks and Recreation Department, hosted a second Library Day at Station 85 for approximately 125 children and adults on Tuesday June 9.

As has been our practice the event included two book readings and crafts provided by the Library in our training room, both featuring our Township librarians. The families were then able to interact with our firefighters, tour the station and even sit in a fire truck. The station was open for tour and hands on events including a kiddie firefighter obstacle course that allowed the kids to carry and pull a hose, pretend to drag a firefighter, chop wood with a plastic axe, ladder a pretend building and finally extinguish a pretend fire with a garden hose. Attendees were also able to use a digital fire extinguisher simulator and practice dialing 911 on our 911 simulator. All hands-on activities were supervised by TSFR volunteer and career staff.

And of course there were coloring books, crayons, pencils, pens, pads and plastic fire helmets for all.

Tanker Drill with Lancaster County

Tanker 85 participated in a regional tanker drill in Lancaster County on Tuesday evening June 2. The training exercise was sponsored by the Cocalico Area Fire Department in the Reamstown/Smokestown area and simulated a house fire with no fixed water supply. Nine tankers from area fire departments ran a shuttle between the simulated fire scene and a remote refilling site that used a pond for supply. Each tanker discharged their payload into a portable folding tank at the fire scene and returned to the refill site to reload. At this point the tanker returned to the scene and repeated the evolution.

Tanker 85 completed four round trips and delivered over 6000 gallons of water in the process. Given that ours was the smallest tanker of the nine involved, is obvious that the exercise successfully delivered several times that amount.

Assist tp Wyomissing on Wellington Blvd

A possible fire involving the porch of a residence on Wellington Blvd in neighboring Wyomissing Boro on Thursday afternoon June 4, had TSFRS Engine 85 responding as part of full structure assignment, assisting Company 79.

E85 arrived at a 2-story residence with light smoke from the front porch. The crew stretched a hose line and discovered a burning planter box that had extended to the siding and underside of a second-floor balcony. The area was well wet down and opened up to ensure that there had been no fire extension into the residence. Crews also checked the interior to find a slight odor of smoke on the second floor due to an open window that allowed smoke inside. Residence was ventilated accordingly and the company subsequently released by Command.

Battery Charger Fire, Wyoming Drive

A possible structure fire was reported in an apartment building on Wyoming Drive in the Berkshire Hills neighborhood of Spring Township on Tuesday afternoon June 2. The initial information was that a scooter was on fire inside the apartment with flames and smoke visible. Accordingly, County Communications dispatched TSFRS for Engine 85, Wyomissing FD for Ladder 79, Western Berks FD for Ladder 18 and Engine 18-1, Shillington for Engine 36, Cumru Twp for Engine 42, and Mt. Penn for RIT, along with Western Berks EMS for Medic 6512.

Upon arrival, L18 reported nothing evident from the front and side of an end-of-row apartment occupancy. The scooter was already out of the apartment, but with a residual smoke condition and unknown extension. Twp police had already removed the occupants. E85 joined L18, with L79 joining them. E36 staged on an adjacent street to established water if needed. L79 and L18 personnel established mechanical ventilation to remove the smoke condition while E85 members ensured extinguishment. The Twp of Spring Fire Marshal arrived and joined Chief 85 with the investigation.

The fire involved a charger for an e-scooter. While the lithium-ion battery was not directly involved, it certainly shows how much worse this event would have been if it had. The fire would have been faster, hotter and more toxic. It would have been more tragic had it happened at night or when unattended. Therefore, BE WARNED about charging e-devices indoors or in living areas, and when no one is present or alert enough to report it quickly. Had the occupants not noticed the overheating charger, the battery may have eventually been compromised.

Vehicle Crash at Wernersville Road

On Monday morning June 1, TSFRS along with our partners from Western Berks Fire and Wyomissing Fire, were dispatched to a reported vehicle crash without injury but with fire. Based on updated information received, Deputy 85 recalled mutual aid while enroute and held Rescue Engine 85. Units arrived on location and confirmed no fire, that the occupant was out of vehicle and that the vehicle was in the yard of a home on Fritzown Road.

RE85 mitigated fluids, secured battery and did initial evaluation of the occupants. Assignment was subsequently placed available with no further service rendered.

Remembering Chief William "Bill" Rehr

The Reading and Berks County Fire Service has lost an icon. Retired Fire Chief William “Bill” Rehr III passed away over the weekend. He was 84 years young. To his family and friends, we at TSFRS express our deepest and affectionate condolences.

His life was the fire service. Joining as an Oakbrook Fire Co. volunteer in Reading in 1959, he also served with the Union and Schuylkill Fire Companies. After a stint in the US Army he continued to volunteer while employed at some very iconic Berks County institutions such as Berkshire Chemical, Car Tech and Boscov’s. He was the last full time chief officer appointed from the volunteer ranks and served as a Deputy Chief until being appointed as the Fire Chief in 1996. His success was an indication of the respect held by both career and volunteer ranks. Along his pathway, he also served as the first Berks County 911 Coordinator and President of the Reading Area Firefighters Museum, a position he occupied until his passing.

Chief Rehr served as a mentor and role model to many in the Reading/Berks firefighting community, whether he knew it or not. His calm presence and approachable, friendly demeanor made him a natural leader to which others gravitated.

He will be missed.

Rest easy. We’ll take it from here boss, and we’ll be taking you with us.

In Memoriam, Officer Kristen Yeager

It is with a profound sense of grief that members of TSFRS express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Officer Kristen Yeager of the Central Berks Regional Police Department. Officer Yeager's End-Of-Watch occurred on Friday evening May 29 as she made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while responding to an emergency request from a neighboring police department. She leaves behind a husband and three children.

We also stand with our brothers and sisters of the Central Berks Regional Police and the entire law enforcement community to mourn her tragic death.

Rest in peace sister.
