Our community is making a difference💧Over the last two weeks, daily water use has been significantly lower than this time last year, and on five days, it even fell below our 5-year average. Our collective savings are adding up, and your efforts are helping make an impact. We are on track to reach our 10% reduction goal, but we still have a long irrigation season ahead, so let’s keep the momentum going!

With hotter temperatures in the forecast this weekend, remember that heat alone doesn’t mean your lawn needs more water. While water use often increases when temperatures rise, we’re still asking everyone to water their lawns twice a week or less. Before making adjustments to your irrigation schedule, check your soil moisture, consider your soil type, and pay attention to recent weather conditions.

Your landscape may not need additional water yet, but if it does, make every drop count. Follow simple water-saving practices like watering during the early morning hours to reduce evaporation and checking for broken or misaligned sprinkler heads that can cause runoff or send water onto sidewalks and driveways instead of your lawn.

This type of awareness goes a long way, and small actions across our communities are proven to add up. Thank you for doing your part.

💧600 buckets = 3,000 gallons!

That’s 600 five-gallon buckets — the average amount of water used in a single irrigation cycle by many lawns that rely on guesswork instead of proper scheduling.

Lets give people the benefit of the doubt:
(If their sprinkler system is calibrated correctly — and they understand that time and flow rate matter!)
💦518 buckets = 2,592 gallons

👉 That’s still just one watering.

Now imagine the impact if you...
🖐Skipped just one watering day a week
🌧Turned your sprinklers off when it rains
🌿Replaced part of your lawn with drought-tolerant plants and drip irrigation
😀Followed the weekly watering guide for how many days to water each week

Small changes = BIG savings. 💦

Still skeptical of our bucket math?

This year is different. 💧 Ongoing drought has brought our water supply availability to a level that requires action under our Drought Contingency Plan. In years like this, the contingency plan helps us all take accountability for conservation. As a wholesale water provider serving over a dozen communities across western and southern Salt Lake County (about 800,000 residents), we’re focused on protecting this shared supply so clean water keeps flowing reliably to every tap. We are all in this together, and we’re asking everyone to do their part.

Level 2 drought conditions were established in March. Under this level, local water providers that exceed their allotted water use will be charged a high-usage fee under existing contracts. Separately from the contingency plan, retail customers served directly by JVWCD may see higher bills under an updated tiered rate system, including a high-use surcharge starting July 1st.

Water users in Utah’s most populous county could face extra fees if they use more water than necessary.

If you looked at our water use across the year, you’d see a sharp spike every summer. Long days, high temperatures, watering lawns—it adds up fast. About 60% of our treated drinking water is used outdoors during the summer. And this year, we’re starting with less.

The good news? Even a small change from each of us makes a real difference. When we all cut back a little, we reduce that summer peak. We’re not losing water—we’re keeping it for when we need it. 💧

Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District is asking you to join us in watering your lawn twice a week or less this summer. 🤝

Part of using water wisely outdoors is knowing when your yard actually needs water. Weather, temperatures, rainfall, soil moisture, and more all play a role in how often irrigation is needed.

We’re excited to partner with KUTV 2News during their UtaH2O Watch morning segments as another free resource to help our community stay informed throughout the season!

A good reminder that irrigation systems should be adjusted with the weather — including turning them off when rain provides the water your landscape already needs.

✔️ Most of Utah: 1 irrigation
✔️ Southern/eastern Utah: up to 2 irrigations
Save water and keep your lawn healthy by watering only when needed.

60% of all the drinking water we use each year goes to outdoor watering in the summer. This year has been a reminder that we need to change how we think about water and be intentional with what we have. Our goal is to use about 10% less water than we did last year. This will put our community in a better position going into next year. So, we are asking everyone to budget with us and only water lawns twice a week or less. 🤝

You can still have a beautiful, functional yard and save a lot of water. Your lawn may not look perfect every day this summer, and that’s okay. We are here to help along the way where we can!

Stay with us this season for practical ways you can use less water while keeping your landscape healthy. Visit learn.jvwcd.gov for more information.💧
