Charges filed in CVS Parking Lot Trailer Theft Investigation

The West Jefferson Police Department has charged Daniel Ray Phipps, 35, of Denny Road, Creston, North Carolina, in connection with the trailer theft that occurred in the CVS parking lot on May 31, 2026.

Following an investigation, Phipps was taken into custody on 6/29/2026 and charged with four felony counts of larceny and two misdemeanor counts of larceny.

The West Jefferson Police Department would like to thank the Ashe county sheriff's office and the public for its assistance and cooperation throughout the investigation. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming as investigators continue to gather information.

Anyone with additional information related to this case is encouraged to contact the West Jefferson Police Department.

The Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance involving the stolen commercial equipment. Investigators are seeking information from anyone who may have been approached by an individual attempting to sell a dump trailer, asphalt sealing equipment, or commercial parking lot striping and paint equipment. Anyone with information regarding these items, or who has been contacted about their sale, is urged to contact the Police Department. Any information provided may assist investigators and will be handled appropriately.

The West Jefferson Police Department is seeking information regarding a Dump Trailer that has been reported stolen.
On Sunday May 31, 2026 a dump trailer that was parked at CVS with tar sealing and pavement striping equipment, was stolen at approximately 11:17 P.M. by a white late 90s model early 2000s 4 door Chevrolet blazer, that went up 221 towards West wood from town. The brand of the trailer is Down 2 Earth, a Georgia based manufacturing company. The trailer is 12 ft and contained commercial parking lot repair equipment, Georgia tag TY71D45. There is damage across the trailer including dents, rust spots, etc. please contact 336-846-5600 if you have any information.

At approximately 7:47 PM Today November 8, 2025 the West Jefferson Police Department received a call for a bomb threat in the area of downtown west jefferson, officers quickly checked and secured the area unable to locate the vehicle or subject which was described. Throughout the past couple hours officers have been checking the area. There is no active threat at this time.

The West Jefferson Police department is seeking help in identifying and locating a truck involved in a hit and run that occurred on February 28, 2025 on backstreet in West Jefferson at around 8PM, if anyone has any Information please contact Crime Stoppers at 336-846-4188.

A friend of ours had this gentleman come over to his business last night and steal fuel from his vehicle.

Zaloos Canoes advised me to tell you, whomever is first to id, gets a free Canoe trip.
