Our club joins the nation in pausing to honor the brave service members who gave everything in defense of our country. Their sacrifice demands our remembrance, but it also serves as a reminder of our responsibility to the service members they left behind.

True remembrance means ensuring that our living veterans receive world-class care. Abraham Lincoln famously noted that the truest way to honor those who died for us is for us to be dedicated to the "unfinished work" they so nobly advanced. Today, that unfinished work includes safeguarding the very systems built to protect our service members. It also means exercising our right to vote - a fundamental freedom our veterans fought and died to protect, and the most direct way we can shape the policies that affect them.

Currently, the vital services our veterans rely on face significant challenges. From workforce reductions to funding shifts that risk fragmenting the VA, our awareness and advocacy are urgently needed. As a club, we understand that protecting VA funding, ensuring benefit processing, and preserving a robust public healthcare system is essential to keeping our national promise.

The most meaningful way we can respect the memory of our fallen heroes is by upholding our obligation to those who made it home. Keep our veterans and their families in your thoughts today and when you fill out your ballot.

Once again we are staring into the abyss. The violence is unspeakable and yet actions like yesterday's shootings remind us of everything wrong with humanity. Although most of the views expressed by the victim in Utah are in direct contradiction to our club's views we must never excuse violence. Quite the contrary, we must persevere and promote peace and understanding.

Today also marks the devastating anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001. During a recent trip to New York City I was compelled to visit the WTC site and was quite moved by the sheer emotion of the memorial itself. It is something that must be seen with one's own eyes.

I remind all of us that although we are in a struggle for the very soul of this country we should keep our discourse civil and lead our discussion with compassion and facts.

The Missouri House joining the gerrymandering frenzy tells us three things:

1. The "need" for this new map is a testament to the vulnerability (a/k/a weakness) at the polls of Donald Trump and of his supporters' very real and well-warranted fear that the majority of voters in 2026 will reject the Trumpist agenda -- like the big, ugly reverse-Robin Hood reconciliation bill and Trumpist tarriff scheme.

2. The elimination of an urban, diverse Congressional seat in Kansas City represented by a popular Black Congressman is a visible reminder that racism and division of our nation by race is at the core of everything the Party of Trump does.

3. The fact that Trumpists want GOP politicians to pick their voters rather than voters to pick their representatives reinforces the need for California to create new districts that give voters, especially voters of color, a fair chance to elect representatives of their own choosing.

Labor and communities are planning more than a barbecue on Labor Day this year because we have to stop the billionaire takeover. Billionaires are converting the government into their private slush fund and just passed the largest wealth giveaway in the history of the US. The money they take from working families, they put in billionaires’ pockets and set aside to fund a private army of ICE agents.

Just like any bad boss, the way we stop the takeover is with collective action. We are working people rising up to stop the billionaire takeover–not just through the ballot box or the courts, but through building a bigger and stronger movement. We are growing our movement and fighting for a country that is more fair, just, equitable, and free for all of us—and not just a chosen few.

Thousands of communities across the country are taking a stand on Labor Day, join us! Together we will demand a country that puts workers over billionaires.

PS: A core principle behind all our events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

“We’re here, because Donald Trump on January 6 tried to light democracy on fire, tried to wreck this county, tried to steal an election,” Governor Newsom said on Thursday. “And here we are, in open and plain sight, before one vote is cast in the 2026 midterm elections, and here he is, once again, trying to rig the system.”

Newsom added: “He doesn’t play by a different set of rules. He doesn’t believe in the rules. And as a consequence, we need to disabuse ourselves of the way things have been done. It’s not enough to just hold hands, have a candlelight vigil and talk about the way the world should be. We have got to recognize the cards that have been dealt."

Trump and Republicans in red states are trying to steal the 2026 midterms because Trump knows he can't win otherwise.

4. Every state in the country should have independent redistricting and under California’s plan we will keep our independent commission - the provisions will only take effect if red states effectuate partisan gerrymanders. The Non-partisan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission will resume its work after the 2030 Census.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee is calling on Democratic state legislatures to use all available powers to protect our democracy – including pursuing mid-cycle redistricting in blue states.

The DLCC is launching our Dems on Redistricting Offensive to ramp up our national strategy to win more state legislative majorities and give Democrats the upper hand to fight fire with fire on redistricting now and in 2030.
