May is Mental Health month

This message is of paramount importance for spouses, immediate family members, partners, and parents. Loved ones frequently observe the effects of trauma hours, days, or weeks following critical incidents. These effects may manifest as subtle mood shifts, heightened anger, social withdrawal, altered sleep patterns, dream reactions, changes in appetite, or substance abuse.

Furthermore, it is crucial to recognize that trauma can also directly impact spouses and family members. This phenomenon is known as Secondary Trauma. Often, this topic is not openly discussed, nor are the resources available to support those experiencing it, as their focus is typically on assisting the primary individual affected by trauma. While the individual directly experiences the trauma, their partners vicariously experience it through narratives and by witnessing its impact on their loved ones. This constitutes secondary trauma. The spouse's secondary trauma arises from intrusive thoughts, hypothetical scenarios, and the anticipation of potential negative outcomes. Hearing incident reports in the background and praying for a safe return rather than an unwelcome notification at the door are also contributing factors.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available not only to the firefighter but also to their family members. Should you require support in processing trauma, please contact a Chief Officer for a confidential referral..

For those who may not be familiar, Billy Boyd is a dispatcher for CHS and Mercy Flight, and a former active Firefighter/EMT with the Avon Fire Department.
A few months ago, Billy and Sarah tragically lost their home in a fire, along with three of their pets. Billy sustained burns to his face and hands and has spent time in the burn unit. He has recently been transferred to a rehabilitation unit as he continues his recovery.
Due to the loss of his belongings in the fire, Billy is currently in need of clothing items for his stay in rehab, including T-shirts, shorts, and sweatpants. Gently used items are not only acceptable but preferred.
If you are able to assist, please send a private message to Carol Greene, and arrangements will be made to get the items to Billy.
Thank you in advance for your kindness, support, and generosity during this difficult time.

The Henrietta Fire District proudly recognizes one of our volunteer companies, the West Henrietta Fire Department, as they celebrate their 100th anniversary.

Organized in 1926 as the second volunteer company in Henrietta, the West Henrietta Fire Department began operations in a small space within Meyers' Garage on the Old Cartwrights Inn property. In 1929, the department relocated across the street to a brick schoolhouse built in 1866—a building they continue to occupy today, shared with a U.S. Post Office branch.

In the mid-1930s, at a time when fire hydrants were not widely available, the department purchased a used gasoline tanker to transport water to emergency scenes. This innovation set a precedent for neighboring departments. While much of the town is now served by hydrants, Station 2 currently operates a 2012 E-One engine carrying 1,000 gallons of water for responses on the New York State Thruway, along with the department’s heavy rescue truck.

The West Henrietta Fire Department has also played a significant role in the leadership of the Henrietta Fire District. Harold Page, then Chief of West Henrietta, became the District’s first Chief following the 1969 consolidation. Francis Byrne served as the first Battalion Chief, later becoming Fire District Chief (1978–1980) and Fire Commissioner; the Training Center at Station 6 is dedicated in his honor. To date, at least five District Chiefs have come from the ranks of West Henrietta.

We thank the members—past and present—of the West Henrietta Fire Department for a century of dedicated service to our community.
