It is with deep sadness that we announce the Line of Duty death of Chief of Patrol Kevin G. Canavan.

Chief Canavan passed away from complications of a 9/11-related cancer, due to his work in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

A three-star chief, he began his 39-year law enforcement career with the Nassau County Police Department on May 31, 1985 as a recruit and rose through the ranks of Police Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Inspector, Inspector, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, and Chief of Patrol. As Chief of Patrol, he was the second-highest ranking uniformed officer and oversaw more than 2,000 members, both sworn and civilian.

Chief Canavan was also appointed to many specialized units and held other designations during his career due to his experience, knowledge, and expertise, which also included being a helicopter pilot in the Aviation Unit - his true love. More recently, he developed a Drone Detection Unit within the Marine and Aviation Bureaus that was utilized during this month’s T20 Cricket World Cup at Eisenhower Park that ensured the safety of residents, fans, and players.

He was a decorated officer who received many awards and citations for his dedication to the residents he served. Just two weeks ago, Chief Canavan received the 2024 Theodore Roosevelt Award for his tireless work ethic even when seriously ill.

Our hearts, prayers, and condolences go out to the entire Canavan family and their friends. Our Department is with them during this shared time of grief.
