SPECIAL OLYMPICS BOCCE EVENT RETURNS TO WEST HAVEN’S OLD GROVE PARK THIS WEEKEND:

Nearly 300 athletes are gearing up to compete in the Special Olympics Connecticut Unified Sports Fall Festival Bocce Competition at West Haven’s Old Grove Park courts Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19-20.

The bocce tournament is open to the public and presented by the Mohegan Tribe.

The opening ceremony is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, and will take place on the shoreline boardwalk in West Haven, the host site for the third year in a row.

The ceremony will feature a torchbearer escorted by members of the West Haven Police and Fire departments and remarks by Mayor Dorinda Borer and Special Olympics organizers.

The city’s six bocce courts were donated and constructed by Special Olympics Connecticut for the Special Olympics World Games bocce competition in July 1995.

Special Olympics Connecticut provides year-round sports training and competitions for more than 12,000 athletes of all ages with intellectual disabilities and Unified Sports partners — their teammates without disabilities.

CITY TIME CAPSULE BURIAL MARKS NATION’S 250TH; CAPSULE TO BE UNEARTHED JULY 4, 2076:

As part of West Haven’s yearlong festivities celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, Mayor Dorinda Borer was joined by fellow Westies on Wednesday evening, Sept. 9, to bury a time capsule on the historic Green for a future generation to discover.

The burial of West Haven’s “America 250th Time Capsule” commemorated the official signing of the Declaration of Independence, which was inked 250 years ago last month.

Borer said she chose Sept. 9 for the event because of its historical significance in America’s founding. On Sept. 9, 1776, the Second Continental Congress officially changed the nation’s name from the “United Colonies” to the “United States of America.”

At the aptly titled West Haven Time Capsule Celebration, Borer was accompanied by 20 West Haven High School history students, who were chosen as “Student Ambassadors of History” for the capsule’s unearthing 50 years from now, on America’s tricentennial on July 4, 2076.
