What races are there?
This year’s election is focused on municipal races, so the Sept. 12 primary will determine which candidates could represent their party in those November general elections. Most notable is the primary that could determine the next mayor of Hartford as it appears up to four Democratic candidates will be involved in running for an open seat. Elsewhere, expect primaries in a couple of other major cities: Bridgeport and New Haven.
Can I vote in the primary election?
You are required to be registered to the specified political party in order to vote in the primary election. While it is too late for anybody to switch their party affiliation in order to vote in the Sept. 12 primary, unregistered voters can get themselves registered and still vote on that day.
Can I vote in person?
Yes, check with your local registrar of voters or visit the secretary of the state’s website to determine your polling place.
What are the polling place hours?
Polling locations are open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Can I vote early?
Voters can only vote ahead of time through absentee ballots. Absentee ballots must become available Aug. 22.
What is the absentee ballot process?
You can begin voting by absentee ballot 21 days before the primary and can request an absentee ballot through a form on the secretary of the state’s website or through their local registrar of voters. Ballots can be mailed to the town clerk or dropped off at an in-person ballot box. Absentee ballots must be received before the close of polls on the day of the election in order to count.
