Today's post from Heather Cox Richardson tackles the need for government to support honest public education for students of all social and economic levels. Her post is long because the explanation and back story can't be condensed into a sound bite. She talks about the wisdom and profound necessity of investing our tax dollars in a system that educates all children to the best of our ability, without favoritism. It's time to work for a public education system that uses our tax dollars wisely, requires level standards for every school that receives our tax money, and doesn't leave low-income kids behind in favor of vouchers for private academies with little or no oversight. (My personal opinion is that this also involves removing the tie between school funding and town-level property taxes, because the quality of your education should not be dependent on the town you live in.)
