Semiquincentennial Camporee (America 250th) May 15-17 at Camp Workcoeman

17 Scouts and 4 Adult Leaders had an absolute blast this weekend attending this special event with challenges, scavenger hunts, hand-on programs and reenactors that brought American history to life.

Back at camp, older scouts helped new crossovers and younger scouts earn rank requirements by teaching patrol cooking, stove operations, sanitary cleanup, tent setup/removal and the Outdoor Code.

May Hike

On Saturday, May 9, Troop 146 visited Salisbury, Connecticut, to hike Lion’s Head. Scouts trekked through light rain, crossing streams and enjoying the blossoming spring forest, before ascending to reach the top at 1,738 feet. Although the visibility was low, the scouts enjoyed lunch on the rocks at the summit. Exploring at the top for a bit brought the total round trip at 5 miles. Great for those scouts needing that 2nd class requirement.

Sandwich Making with KOC St. Thomas

For those scouts who opted to give their time back to community on the same May 9th morning instead of hiking, Scouts participated in this service opportunity presented by St. Thomas KOC. Sandwiches were donated to House of Bread and Loaves and Fishes. Thank you Scouts and St Thomas KOC.

Sunday April 26th we celebrated and acknowledged Bryan Andrew Russell as an Eagle Scout at his Court of Honor.

He is the Troop’s 88th Eagle Scout and we are as proud of him as all the others!

His brother, Evan, a sophomore at UConn and a Troop 146 Eagle Scout, conducted the Eagle Charge and pronounced him an Eagle Scout.

Bryan’s Eagle Service Project was a Bike Repair Station located at Winding Trails in Farmington.

The idea was germinating since he was an 8th grader.

Bryan is currently a Senior at Conard High School and will attend Keene State College this fall pursuing a major in Construction Management & Construction Safety Management as well as full commit to play Rugby!

Congratulations, Bryan!! ,

April Hike

Gorgeous spring daffodils popped up on an early spring morning in time to witness eager Scouts who greeted them as their thirst quenched for what new challenge ASM Mr. C. had in scope, as the Troop embarked up to Heublein Tower via Nod Way (3.6 miles, 915 ft elevation gain).

In addition to the daffodils, a slithering trail mate made their way through the leaf brush to see what all the commotion was about.

It was just the distraction needed to break up the muddy 1st quarter mile and steep ascent up as this was the second prep hike for those scouts participating in the future summer adventure. Scouts were encouraged to be outfitted with proper foot wear, full packs with anticipated gear or weight of 20-25lbs and 10 essentials. Rest of scouts and adults were encouraged to bring day packs.

We were also stoked to welcome one of our new crossovers out for his first troop hike!

March Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser

A special thanks once again to Mrs. Candice S. our event coordinator and all the Scouts who worked the event with such enthusiasm and panache. And we would be remiss if we did not thank all who attended and helped us reach our goal. Good time had by all!

March Campout

Picture perfect spring cabin campout this weekend at Camp Strang in Goshen, CT.

Scouts actively participated in an array of rank advancement honing their skills and exploring the camp hiking. Two scouts in particular (Ben R and Zach D.) completed in addition the orienteering course (4.5 miles total w/ hiking). An added unplanned bonus was the opportunity to take in a game of friendly football as Troop 3 from Derby was also on site.

Back at the cabin scouts enjoyed practicing their cooking, some evening card games and tended to the wood stove for those who have previously earned their firem’n chit.

Though a smaller crew this trip led for greater individual advancement, 1:1 with each other and Scout leaders (Scoutmaster Mr W., and ASMs Mr C., and Mr S.) - we missed in tow our high school scout leadership as many kicked off spring sports practices and tryouts.

March Hike

Balmy 31 degree morning kicked off a beautiful early spring hike for the Troop at Chauncey Peak Trail in Meriden, CT led by ASM Mr. C. While every hike is open to all, this was the kickoff to a monthly future series of hikes he crafted in preparation for a much larger summer hiking adventure in August. Each monthly hike will offer little more flavor of difficulty. Scouts participating in summer adventure brought packs of 20-25 lbs of weight to build their strength with items included with what they will need in future.

This morning brought a wading snow melt brook to traverse through with slippery rocks and some unpleasant wet boots to get to trail head. Trail was steep with some rocks and reminder that a good set of hiking poles will come in handy going forward. Once up top the wind was fierce but the views spectacular.

Thanks to Shanna for many of the pics captured. ,
