West Harrison Library

West Harrison Library "The only thing you absolutely have to know is the location of the library." - Albert Einstein The Silver Lake Free Library was chartered July 19, 1929.

It was first located in a room in the Underhill Avenue School, currently the West Harrison Recreation Center. Later, it moved to one of the stores on Lake Street (Taylor Boulevard), currently occupied by the dry cleaners. In 1953 the library moved to its present location, a town building that was originally the Visiting Nurse Association, at the corner of Madison and Underhill Streets. In 1964 an

addition was added to the back of the library, which doubled its floor space. In 1967 the Silver Lake Free Library became a branch of the Harrison Public Library. Until 1975, the basement of the library housed the Recreation Department. At that time, the Underhill Avenue School closed and the Recreation Department moved into that building. The basement level then became free for library expansion. In 1977 there was a major renovation of the building, converting the lower level into the children’s room.

The Harrison Public Library, West Harrison Branch will launch its free annual Summer Reading Program on Monday, June 1, inviting readers of all ages to participate.

This year’s theme, “Unearth a Story,” celebrates discovery, dinos and hidden worlds. Participants can register and track their reading through Friday, Aug, 7.

We have many STEM programs for children ages 6+!!

Children earn reading badges and when they complete the program (reading 25 books) there is a special prize and party for them, with more prizes. Teens and adults have their own programs, too!

From hands-on science activities, music, crafts, storytelling, and creative experiences, we want to create a summer that feels adventurous, welcoming, and fun for the entire community.

Spring has officially checked out some space at our library! The garden is waking up with new buds and plantings, and we even had a furry visitor "chilling" by the front door this morning. 🐰✨ Come for the books, stay for the blooms!
