Every year, we honor the fallen during Police Week. Today, with our Law Enforcement Family, we recognized our fallen, Chief of Police Paul H. Mueller; end of watch March 20, 1981.

I am uncertain of the number of these events I have attended, but this year’s event was particularly surreal. Hosted by Benton County, it took place on the square in front of the courthouse. While we solemnly acknowledged each of the fallen, the world continued around us. A constant flow of cars, people, construction noise, and a fire alarm echoing through the square; life persisted around us. It was a fitting scene. Law enforcement, maintaining their duty and oath regardless of the circumstances, this short moment exemplified this.

I do not harbor any ill will towards the fire alarm or the individuals who laughed as they crossed the square. The world around us, like most, focus on living their lives and making the best of their circumstances. I am confident that most individuals (even if they do not fully comprehend it) know there is a dedicated group of individuals who are waiting to respond to their call for help. These unique individuals stand apart from the general population, sworn to an oath and willing to sacrifice for one another and their community.

As we come to the end of National Police Week, please pray for all emergency services and our families that sacrifice and support us behind the scenes.
