Last night, I had the opportunity to reunite with my friend of almost 40 years, René González. I met René when I was just 17 years old… and ever since then, I’ve witnessed not only his incredible talent, but the impact God has made through his life and music.

For those who may not know him, René González is considered one of the most influential voices in Spanish Christian music. For decades, he has filled auditoriums, ministered to thousands, and brought messages of faith, hope, and restoration throughout Latin America, Puerto Rico, the United States, Europe and beyond. His music has touched generations.

I’ll never forget when I recorded my first music production back in 2001. My song “Perder Para Ganar” began climbing the charts in Puerto Rico because of him. René personally called radio stations and told them:
“You have to hear this song.”

Before I knew it, I was singing in front of packed auditoriums in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico… and eventually all over the island for several years. Something a kid from the streets of Chicago could have never imagined.

At one point, I had a very difficult decision to make:
Move to Puerto Rico and fully pursue music… or stay and continue my career in law enforcement.

And honestly, it wasn’t easy.

But I loved police work deeply. I felt called to it. So I made the decision to keep music as a part-time passion while dedicating my life to serving others behind the badge.

Then last night happened…

After almost 40 years of friendship, I stood beside René once again as he sang… and let me tell you something:
This man STILL has it.

The voice.
The presence.
The passion.
Absolutely incredible.

And what amazes me most is that after all these decades, he is still in HIGH demand throughout Latin America.

It was truly an honor to stand on that stage and sing “Perder Para Ganar” (Losing to Win) with him once again.

Epic.

And who knows…

Maybe it’s time to step back into the music scene one more time.

Recently, someone I’m working with on a project said to me, “Lou… you’ve lived several lives.”

That statement hit me harder than they probably realized.

It made me stop and reflect on the journey… the streets of Chicago… the pain… the failures… the victories… the badge… the classrooms… the campaigns… the setbacks… the reinventions.

And it made me wonder…

How many lives do we have to live before we finally discover our true purpose in this world?

Maybe the real question is this:

How many times are we willing to reinvent ourselves?
How many chapters are we willing to rewrite?
How many times are we willing to get back up after life knocks us down?

Because living “several lives” doesn’t just mean changing careers or titles.

It means surviving failed relationships…
Friendships lost…
Friendships you had to walk away from…
Letting go of toxic people and toxic environments, even when it hurt to do it.

It means outgrowing places you once thought you’d stay forever.

Some people see reinvention as inconsistency.
I see it as growth.

Sometimes God doesn’t call you to stay the same person forever.
Sometimes He allows you to break… to lose… to struggle… so you can evolve into the person you were always meant to become.

The truth is, every season of my life taught me something:
The streets taught me survival.
Law enforcement taught me courage.
Fatherhood taught me responsibility.
Pain taught me humility.
Faith taught me redemption.

And maybe purpose isn’t found in one single life…
Maybe purpose is built from every version of ourselves we had the courage to become.

Never be afraid to rewrite your story.

Some of the greatest chapters are written after people think the book is already finished.

And maybe…
just maybe…
this next chapter is the one that finally explains all the others.

For nearly 40 years, I’ve had the privilege of calling Dr. Isaias Mercado a friend.

Long before titles, accomplishments, or bestselling books… I admired something about him that stood out immediately. Excellence.

Isaias always dressed sharp. And I mean sharp. He wore bow ties before bow ties were cool. Everywhere he went, he carried himself with confidence, professionalism, purpose, and vision. Looking back now, I realize something powerful…

He dressed, walked, and talked like the man he was becoming… not the man he was at the time.

Today, he is living exactly what he envisioned years ago.

As President of Envision Leadership Group and National Director of Training at the National Youth Advocate Program, Dr. Mercado has dedicated his life to leadership development, coaching, workforce growth, and helping people maximize their potential.

Last year, while I was running for Sheriff of Kane County, I had the opportunity to watch him speak in Batavia, Illinois. I was genuinely impressed by the way he connects with people. He doesn’t just motivate audiences… he equips them. He delivers practical, valuable tools that professionals can immediately apply in leadership, communication, and team development.

That’s why I’m honored to help present his bestselling new book:

The 10 F Words of Feedback: Embrace Them and Enhance Team Performance.

What I appreciate most about this book is that it is not just theory. It’s practical, relatable, and immediately useful for leaders, pastors, coaches, supervisors, HR professionals, educators, law enforcement leaders, and anyone responsible for helping others grow.

Dr. Mercado reminds us that feedback should not be feared, avoided, or delivered carelessly. When done correctly, feedback becomes a powerful tool for growth, accountability, trust, communication, and stronger performance.

His framework emphasizes principles like:
• Going first
• Giving feedback frequently
• Focusing on behavior, not personal attacks
• Staying grounded in facts
• Leading people toward the future
• Following up
• Having face-to-face conversations when needed
• Honoring feelings
• And leading with faith in people’s ability to grow

One line from the book truly stood out to me:

“Feedback doesn’t define us; it refines us.”

Powerful.

As an executive leader in law enforcement myself today, I know this book will personally and professionally enrich me as well. I’m honored to have received a signed copy, and I strongly encourage others to get theirs today.

Congratulations, my friend. I’m proud of you, proud of what you’ve built, and grateful to see you impacting lives the way you always envisioned.

Not every win comes on Election Night…

Sometimes the real win is still showing up… still standing… and still serving.

Two candidates. One mission.

We didn’t get the outcome we wanted this time… but make no mistake — we’re far from done.

We’re still here… working for our county, supporting our community, and backing the small businesses that keep towns like Elburn alive.

Because leadership isn’t a title… it’s action.

Elburn Villages Trustee Lou Santoyo and Chris Hansen… still in the fight… still making a difference.

And trust me…

We’ll be back. 💪

One year ago today…

I announced my candidacy for Sheriff of Kane County.

And just like that… everything changed.

For a year, my life was on display.

Every step… every word… every decision…
scrutinized, questioned, supported, challenged.

And while that was happening…

My personal life… was on hold.

Because when you commit to something bigger than yourself…

It demands everything.

But looking back now…

I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I met people I would have never met.
Built relationships that will last a lifetime.
Had conversations that mattered.

And most importantly…

I saw, firsthand, the need—and the opportunity—
to bring people together
and push for social change for the better.

That was always the mission.

Not a title… not a position…

But impact.

This past year didn’t just test me…

It revealed me.

It forced me to look back on where I came from…
what shaped me…
and why I’ve spent a lifetime doing what I do.

Some of those realizations…

I’m still putting into words.

Some stories take time to tell…

And I’m getting closer.

As for what’s next…

I’m not done.

Not with the mission.
Not with the message.

And who knows…

Maybe in four years…

I lace them up one more time.

For now…

Just know this—

The journey continues.

If that man on 18th Street
had never been shot in front of me…

I would have never become a cop.

For years I ran from that moment.

But it chased me....

Until one day… I turned around and faced it.

That’s where I found my destiny.

30 years of police work.

What are you running from?

Some stories need to be told....stay tuned.
