I spent the afternoon knocking doors for Tony Thompson for Iowa in the Urbandale portion of Dallas County and talking with voters about the future of Iowa Senate District 23.

Tony is a fourth-generation Iowan who returned to his family’s farm near Elkhart, where he has farmed, built a small business and helped connect local farmers and producers with Iowa consumers.

He’s running for an open seat with a focus on strong public schools, clean water, affordable health care, supporting working families and investing in the communities we call home. Those are priorities I share, and I appreciate Tony’s practical approach to finding solutions and bringing people together.

I was glad to spend a few hours helping his campaign and having some good conversations at the doors. Senate District 23 has an opportunity to elect a thoughtful, community-focused leader this November, and I’m proud to support Tony.

I spent the afternoon knocking doors for Heather Jones-Brown for Polk County and talking with residents across District 4.

We had a lot of good conversations at the doors, and one thing was clear: voters are ready for change and ready for thoughtful, hardworking leadership on the Polk County Board of Supervisors.

I’m proud to support Heather and enjoyed getting out there to help her campaign. Let’s get her across the finish line this November!

Tonight’s Des Moines West Side Democrats meeting was a sobering one.

We heard from a healthcare panel featuring physician and State Representative Austin Baeth, Broadlawns Board of Trustees member Emily Westergaard, and pharmacist and Polk County Supervisor candidate John Forbes.

Here’s what we heard:

Healthcare workers are being squeezed. Hospitals, nurses, pharmacists, and patients are all feeling the pressure of a healthcare system that is increasingly driven by profit.

So who stands up for the workers? Unions do.

On UnityPoint workers organizing, the panel agreed that unionization can be a powerful way to protect healthcare professionals, their working conditions, and the quality of care they provide.

John Forbes also pointed to the enormous shortage of healthcare practitioners and the need to protect the professions that are already stretched thin.

And then we talked about cancer in Iowa. 😞

Rep. Baeth shared that some pathologists are seeing cancer tumors they barely recognize. Cancer doctors know there is something seriously wrong...

Iowa’s cancer rate is 14% higher than the national average meaning more than 2,500 Iowans PER YEAR are being diagnosed simply because they live here.

And yet, when it comes to research, our state’s Republican legislative majority has chosen to fund research into certain cancers while leaving other critical areas behind. For example:

Iowa ranks #1 in the nation for lymphoma, yet when legislation proposed $450,000 for research into that cancer (and others), all but TWO Republican lawmakers voted no. The bill failed.

These aren’t abstract political OR partisan debates. These are decisions being made in our Statehouse by a rubber stamping majority that affect Iowa patients, healthcare workers, and human life. We MUST flip seats.

I recently had the opportunity to join Friends of the Des Moines Catholic Worker House as they celebrated 50 years of serving our community.

We marked the occasion the way the Catholic Worker House has for decades, by serving a meal to more than 200 people. Today, the organization serves more than 3,000 meals each month to people in need.

It was good to spend time with Frank Cordaro, Friends of the Catholic Worker House Board Chair Ray Blase, Kimberly Graham for Polk County Attorney, heather4polkcounty and everyone else who has supported this important work.

Congratulations on 50 years of service, and thank you to everyone who continues to make sure our neighbors have a place to turn for a warm meal.

What a turnout for this year’s sold-out Polk County Democrats Steak Fry!

Des Moines Biergarten was a perfect backdrop to hear from an impressive lineup of candidates and speakers.

A special thank you to Congressman Jamie Raskin and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse for joining us in Iowa and sharing their perspectives on the work ahead.

Events like the Steak Fry are a reminder of the energy and hard work happening right here in Polk County. Thank you to the Polk County Democrats, volunteers and everyone who helped make this year’s event such a success.

I’m proud to endorse Heather Jones-Brown for Polk County in District 4.

Heather fought hard and earned her victory in a tough Democratic primary. Now, she has another important race ahead of her in November.

It was great chatting with Heather at the Iowa State Fair Parade. The more I get to know Heather, the more confident I am that she is exactly the kind of thoughtful, hardworking leader we need on the Polk County Board of Supervisors.

Heather understands that serving on the Board is about listening to people, doing the work and staying focused on the issues that affect our communities, including mental health, water quality and strong county services.

I’m looking forward to working alongside her, and I hope you’ll join me in supporting Heather Jones-Brown this November.

Saturday was a busy afternoon catching up with Democrats and neighbors across Polk County.

I started at the West Des Moines Democrats’ annual picnic at Raccoon River Park, then headed to Lucky Horse Beer & Burgers in Des Moines for a gathering with West Side and Northwest Area Democrats.

I appreciated the chance to visit with so many familiar faces, meet some new ones and discuss the issues affecting our community.

Thanks to everyone who organized both events!
