Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We especially honor the 72 law enforcement officers and hundreds of firefighters and first responders who gave their lives that day, running toward danger while others ran from it. Their courage still guides the officers who serve and protect our community today. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

🚧 Meeting Street Improvement Project Update 🚧
The Meeting Street Improvement Project is kicking off, and we are creating a street where business and community meet!

Here's what to expect:
• Starting Monday, September 14, the eastbound right lane of Meeting Street will close to through traffic from the 400 to 900 blocks. Meeting Street will remain open to traffic. Business and resident entrances and driveways will remain accessible throughout construction.
• Construction began Monday, September 7, in the City-owned unimproved parking lot next to the Artisan Market Pavilion at 425 Meeting Street. The parking lot is expected to reopen on Friday, September 25.

Over the next two weeks, demolition and construction will move into the 400 block of Meeting Street. Please slow down, watch for crews, and plan for extra travel time in the area.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K
Run & Walk is this Friday, September 4, 2026, at 7 PM. The run will begin in the City of Columbia, enter the City of West Columbia on Meeting Street to Alexander Road, and continue into the City of Cayce onto Axtell Drive.

The route will begin shutting down around 6:45 PM. The Gervais Street Bridge and Alexander Road will be closed during the run. Motorists will need to use an alternate route, such as Jarvis Klapman Blvd or I-26. The Blossom Street Bridge will also be closed.

On September 1, 2026, at the regular council meeting, newly certified Officer Farhat was recognized by the council and Mayor Miles for graduating at the top of his academy class and earning the prestigious JP Strom Award in August. West Columbia Police Officers Foundation chairmen Tim James and Steve Cohen recognized his dedication and hard work by presenting him with a new pistol. Nice work, Officer Farhat!
WCPOF is a nonprofit organization that remains prepared to provide financial assistance to officers in emergencies. They also provide equipment and training for our officers and put on events for our employees and their families throughout the year.
