The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission (SEIRPC) has been awarded a $1.2 million grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to identify, repair, and remove dangerous lead paint in homes across Southeast Iowa. The new HUD grant will enable SEIRPC to support 29 homes with young children by covering all costs associated with lead paint hazard reduction — including inspections, repairs, removal, and temporary relocation during the work. Because funding is limited to 29 homes, early applications are encouraged. Last week, our planning department attended presentations hosted by students and faculty participating in the Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC) program at the University of Iowa. Each year, IISC partners with one or two Iowa communities, bringing together the creative efforts of multiple University of Iowa classes to address issues identified by city leaders, while providing students with unique, hands-on opportunities to apply their learning in ways that benefit Iowa communities. This year, we were thrilled that Burlington and West Burlington were selected as IISC partner communities!

Check out the pictures above for a snapshot of the Arts & Culture Master Plan formulated by students in the UI School of Planning and Public Affairs and a look at the West Burlington Downtown Streetscaping project completed by Civil & Environmental Engineering students.

To learn more about IISC and this year’s projects, go to https://iisc.uiowa.edu/home!

Thank you to the students and faculty for helping to create a more vibrant, sustainable Southeast Iowa!
