🐔 New Urban Chicken Regulations Are Now in Effect

The City of West Burlington has adopted new regulations for keeping urban chickens within city limits. An Urban Chicken Permit is now required, and properties must meet the ordinance’s requirements for the number of hens allowed, coop and run placement, setbacks, sanitation, and animal care. Roosters are prohibited.

Already have chickens? Under Section 55A.14, residents who were keeping chickens when the ordinance took effect on September 1, 2026, must apply for an Urban Chicken Permit within 60 days—by October 31, 2026. Existing chickens and enclosures must also be brought into compliance within 90 days, unless the City approves a different compliance period in writing.

WATER TREATMENT UPDATE | Beginning Sept. 3rd:
Burlington Municipal Waterworks will temporarily change how they disinfect the public water supply from using chloramines to free chlorine. This annual preventive maintenance helps keep the water distribution system clear of bacterial contamination. Water consumers may detect a slight chlorine scent and taste in the water. The water will remain safe for all standard uses, and the treatment method is anticipated to continue into early October.
🔹 Reason for the shift: Free chlorine serves as a more potent disinfectant, offering a more comprehensive cleaning of the water system.
🔹 Role of chloramines: They linger longer in the system and help minimize the formation of byproducts such as TTHMs and HAA5s
