Does all of your gas tax go directly to the roads you drive every day?

Not exactly.

In Illinois, Motor Fuel Tax goes through a distribution process before it reaches local road systems.

Portions are set aside first for things like:

* Administration and required adjustments
* State-level transportation needs
* Other transportation-related programs

After that, the remaining funds are distributed between:

* State highways
* Counties
* Municipalities
* Township road districts

By the time it reaches township road systems—who maintain a large portion of the total road miles—it is only a smaller share of the overall funding.

That’s one reason Motor Fuel Tax alone doesn’t fully cover the cost of maintaining local roads, and why property taxes are still needed.

This chart from TOI.org shows how Motor Fuel Tax is distributed

Not all road funding is the same per mile.

In Illinois, motor fuel tax funding per mile varies significantly depending on who maintains the road.

Approximate funding per mile:

* State roads: ~$234,000 per mile
* County roads: ~$22,000 per mile
* Municipal roads: ~$11,000 per mile
* Township roads: ~$2,300 per mile

At the same time, township roads make up the largest portion of total road miles.

This difference is one reason local road systems often rely on property taxes to maintain roads.

Most of the roads you drive every day are NOT state roads.

In Illinois, the majority of road miles are maintained at the local level.

Roughly speaking:

* Township roads: ~70,000 miles
* Municipal roads: ~43,000 miles
➡️ Total local roads: 110,000+ miles

Compared to:

* County roads: ~20,000 miles
* State roads: ~15,000 miles

Local roads make up the majority of the entire system.

Your property tax rate didn’t change the same way as your neighbor’s—and there’s a reason for that.

In Illinois, tax rates vary by location and taxing districts.

That’s why some people see increases while others don’t.

Understanding both tax rates and assessed values is key to understanding your total tax bill.

Why do property taxes go up even when tax rates go down?

In Illinois, your property tax bill is based on:

Tax Rate × Assessed Value

Even if the tax rate goes down, if your property value increases, your total tax bill can still go up.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings about property taxes.

I’ll be sharing a few simple posts over the next couple weeks to help explain how this system works.

Recently we’ve had some signs stolen including a Stop sign. Just a reminder that it is a serious crime to do so. You steal a Stop sign and later that day or night, before there’s a chance to replace it, someone unfamiliar with the road blows through that intersection. Then cause an accident that could kill a friend or family member all because you thought it was fun to steal a sign to put in your garage. If you really want a sign for your garage or “man cave”contact your township or county. It’s possible they could lead you to where you can buy one or even give you an old one that no longer meets state requirements. Personally I’d rather have an old paint faded one with raised letters than a new one with a highly reflective printed vinyl sticker.
