Your Next Sheriff for Ogemaw County — Jeff Short
Jeff Short’s commitment to public service began at a young age while participating in the Midland County Youth Explorers Program under Midland Township Chief Dan Prybyski. At just 12 years old, Jeff knew he was called to serve his community in law enforcement. During his high school years at Bullock Creek, Jeff began gaining real-world experience as a
Marine Deputy with the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office (1998–2000). He also served as a Reserve Officer with the Coleman City Police Department during that same time—laying the foundation for a
lifelong career in public service.
In 1999, Jeff was hired full-time with the Midland County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Deputy, while also volunteering as a Reserve Deputy. His time there was instrumental in shaping his professionalism and dedication to the field. Soon after, he was accepted into the Michigan State Police Academy.
Jeff graduated from the 119th Trooper Recruit School in 2000 and began his career with the Michigan State Police at the West Branch Post. Over the next 25 years, he rose through the ranks, serving in multiple leadership roles and assignments, including Trooper, Detective Trooper, Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant (Assistant Post Command), and First Lieutenant (Post Command of the West Branch Post). He retired honorably in 2025 after 25 years of distinguished service. Following retirement, Jeff continued his dedication to public safety and was sworn in as a Road Patrol Deputy with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office on October 29, 2025, where he proudly serves today.
A longtime resident of Ogemaw County since 2000, Jeff has lived in Ogemaw Township since 2003. He has been married to his wife, Mary Jo Short-Ehinger, since 2003. They have a beautiful daughter, Shelby Short, who is a freshman at the Ogemaw Heights High School.
With over 25 years of experience in law enforcement, leadership, and community service, Jeff Short is preparing to serve as your next Sheriff in the 2028 election. His commitment remains strong leadership with integrity, serve with purpose, and put Ogemaw County first.
God is Good!
