Public Act 161 of 2013 - "Dannie Lee Barnes disable veteran property tax relief act"

Governor Snyder signed PA 161 on November 12, 2013.

If you are a disabled veteran or the unremarried spouse, and the veteran meets at least one of the three requirements below, you may be eligible for property tax relief;

1. Determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA) to be permanently and totally disabled as a result of military service and entitled to veterans benefits at the 100% rate.

2. Have certificate from the U.S. Veterans Administration, or its successor, certifying that you received or are receiving pecuniary assistance due to disability for specially adapted housing.

3. Have been rated by the USDVA as individually unemployable.

Specifically, the bill exempts from the collection of taxes under the act real property used and owned as a homestead by a disabled veteran who was discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States under Honorable conditions.

You must file an affidavit along with proof that the veteran meets at least one of the requirements listed above with your township supervisor or township assessing officer.
