Traffic Enforcement Leads to OWI Arrest and Child Welfare Investigation

West Bend, WI - On June 12th, 2026, at 12:10AM, a Washington County Sheriff's Office deputy conducted a traffic stop after observing a vehicle traveling 100 MPH on State Highway 33 entering the City of West Bend.

During the stop, the driver, a 49-year-old City of West Bend woman, displayed signs of impairment and subsequently failed standardized field sobriety tests. The driver was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated (1st Offense). An evidentiary chemical test later indicated a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit.

During the investigation, deputies learned that the driver had left minor children, ages 7 and 9, unattended at a local hotel while going out drinking. The West Bend Police Department subsequently responded to investigate those potential child neglect concerns.

Probation and Parole also placed a hold on the driver, and she is currently in custody at the Washington County Jail.

This incident serves as a reminder that impaired driving places everyone at risk. Choosing to drive after consuming alcohol not only endangers motorists, passengers, and pedestrians, but can also have serious consequences for families and children.

Case: Single Vehicle Fatality Crash in the Town of Wayne
Authority: Sgt Brad Rodich #115

On 05-14-2026 at 3:44pm, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center took multiple 911 calls of a single vehicle roll-over crash on Hwy 28 east of I-41 near Farm Lane in the Town of Wayne. Witnesses located a single unresponsive female occupant and attempted life saving measures with the assistance of the on-line dispatchers. Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with Kohlsville First Responders and West Bend Rescue were subsequently dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival of First Responders, life saving measures were continued, however the driver and sole occupant, a female in 80’s from Lomira was pronounced deceased at the scene. The initial investigation showed that the vehicle was eastbound on Hwy 28 when it failed to negotiate the curve and overturned into a farm field.

The Sheriffs Office Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene for additional documentation and investigation. A portion of Hwy 28 was shut down for approximately 4 hours for the response, documentation and clean up efforts. The incident remains open at this time.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Washington County Medical Examiners Office.

This morning, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with the Village of Richfield for an important community event featuring McGriddles, hash browns, Kwik Trip donuts (yes, we’re aware of the stereotype), orange juice, and policing.

Thanks to the Holy Hill Organization of Parents and Staff fundraiser, Kendal (Richfield Middle School) and Bentley and Drake (Fries Lake Elementary) claimed the winning bid for breakfast with the Sheriff, Deputy Bautz, and Village Administrator Jim Healy at Village Hall.

The kids asked tough questions, inspected squad cars, and may or may not have attempted to negotiate “no homework” as official county policy.

Before getting a ride to school, the Sheriff officially swore them in as Honorary Junior Deputy Sheriffs for the day.

We appreciate the opportunity to spend time with these great kids and future community leaders.

We would also like to formally apologize to their teachers for serving questionable amounts of sugar immediately before dropping the kids off at school.

Heavy Law Enforcement Presence / Armed Subject Incident Resolved in Town of Hartford

TOWN OF HARTFORD, WI — On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Washington County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office in apprehending an armed male subject believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis following a domestic disturbance investigation originating in Dodge County.

The incident began after Dodge County authorities received information regarding a domestic-related investigation involving a 62-year-old male who had reportedly left a Dodge County residence armed with a rifle while making statements indicating possible suicidal intentions, including threats of “suicide by cop.”

The subject was ultimately located inside a motorhome parked on a farm property in the 7200 block of Arthur Road in the Town of Hartford. Due to credible information that the subject was armed with an AR-15-style rifle, had made threatening statements, and a female subject was sheltered in place inside the home directly adjacent to the RV, a large-scale law enforcement response was initiated to protect the public and safely resolve the situation.

Deputies quickly established containment around the property while nearby roadways, including portions of Arthur Road, County Highway U, and Airport Drive, were temporarily shut down to ensure public safety and maintain a secure perimeter. Public safety also coordinated closely with personnel from the Hartford Municipal Airport as airport operations were interrupted because emergency egress to the area necessitated crossing active runways during the emergency response.

Negotiators from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and assisting agencies established communication with the subject and worked for an extended period to peacefully de-escalate the situation. During the incident, the subject was observed outside the RV armed with a rifle before retreating back inside the vehicle.

During the tactical operations the female occupant who had sheltered in place inside the residence on the property was safely extracted by law enforcement utilizing the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office armored rescue vehicle. Additionally, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office armored rescue vehicle was strategically deployed to block and immobilize the RV, preventing the subject from leaving the property and further reducing risk to the public and responding personnel.

At approximately 6:57 p.m., the subject surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without injury to the public, law enforcement personnel, or the subject himself. A firearm was later recovered from inside the RV.

“This incident highlights the critical role our crisis negotiators play during high-risk situations involving individuals in crisis,” said Sheriff Martin Schulteis. “Their patience, professionalism, and ability to build communication under extremely tense circumstances were instrumental in bringing this situation to a peaceful resolution. Because of their efforts, along with the coordinated response of all assisting agencies, everyone involved went home safely tonight.”

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office would also like to thank the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, Hartford Police Department, Hartford Fire & Rescue, and all agencies that are a part of the multi-jurisdictional Washington County Tactical Team for their professionalism, coordination, and disciplined response during this high-risk incident. Their collective efforts helped bring the situation to a safe and peaceful conclusion.

The investigation remains ongoing through the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office. Additional information regarding any potential charges will be released by that agency.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Washington County Tavern League for their continued support of public safety initiatives throughout Washington County over the years. Their commitment to our communities has made a real and lasting impact.

Most recently, the Tavern League provided a substantial donation that allowed Fire Suppression Solutions LLC to equip three additional squad cars with fire suppression tools. These devices have already proven their value, having been deployed in more than 18 incidents across the county to help protect lives and property.

During the presentation of the donation, Fire Suppression Solutions LLC further demonstrated their commitment to public safety by announcing the donation of an additional fire suppression unit. These four units will be immediately deployed in squad cars throughout the county, allowing deputies to rapidly deploy these throw-in suppression devices during early-stage and fully developed fires.

Partnerships like this demonstrate the powerful difference community organizations and private businesses can make when they invest in public safety. The Washington County Tavern League and Fire Suppression Solutions LLC continue to be strong supporters of first responders and the residents we proudly serve.

We are grateful for their dedication to making Washington County a safer place for everyone.

During National Police Week, we pause to honor the men and women of law enforcement who serve our communities with courage, professionalism, and integrity every day. We especially remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and the families who continue to carry that loss with strength and grace.

Here in Washington County, I am proud of the deputies, corrections officers, dispatchers, and professional staff who answer the call at all hours—often in difficult and dangerous circumstances—while remaining committed to protecting our citizens and supporting one another.

Law enforcement is more than a profession. It is a commitment to service, accountability, and standing beside our communities in both the best and most challenging moments.

Please join me this National Police Week in thanking all those who wear the badge and remembering the heroes who never made it home.

We Will Never Forget.
